Try use as much length of the stone as possible for even wear and less or at least amount of flattening of the stone , rotate the stone regular also try keep even wear . Mark i think it was you once said try keep the stone at least hip high for more even or level strokes ?? and have done so ever sin...

Too true Mark and another thing using paper if you slice slowly using all the blade as you go if there is a dull spot it will pick up at that point and you know exactly at what part of the blade you may need to tidy up .

Its the slurry n the swarfe as well as the feedback that lets me know im on track to what i want to acheieve :).
I do rinse away and let another lot form if it gets too much though..

New stone with maybe a protective or other type of film over face of stone . Assume it would dissapear after a couple of sharpening sessions..

As others have said , spend time onboard here .Listen n watch :) Peter Nowlan has some good vids on (Knife Planet) as well as Ken and heaps of others on Youtube . Practice and gain a passion , wont take long to get the hang of it :)..

Keep getting this message up on my phone or sometimes PC when i want to suss out whats happenning onboard !!??, message comes up something about cloudfare or something or other and cant get into the site ??..

Onya Pete :), Burr Micro Burr always there or at least most times and that is with most grits till you start getting to very fine grit stones .. There is another method of sharpening where you try stop short of forming a Burr , freehand also but for me getting that Burr and Micro Burr progression hi...

If you have deer hide handy. Smooth side does a good job also.
Fav was rootail now its deerhide.
Thin though, not that, thats a problem.

Thanks for the Kohetsu stone recommendations folks. Been on a stone buying binge late (20+ over the past few weeks). These are probably going to be my next 2 stones. You are lucky you live in a Country where you can access Stones at a reasonable price :) , not like here where they take the weight out of your piggybank :).. Buy some and start enjoying the journey , otherwise you shall miss the Boat..
