Re: Bare Strop vs Loaded with CBN or Diamond

I use a bare strop to make sure I got rid of the burr, or as a kid of steel.
I use a loaded strop instead of a fine stone to finish sharpening or to touch up the blade.

Re: Should we add more King stones?

The King Hyper and Neo stones are very good. But from the outside looking in, it looks like stones don't move without bunch of people in the forums advocating for them. One problem with King is that their line is all over the place. A $20 1K King isn't cutting like a King Hyper. It's hard to make a ...

On the comment that sometimes VG-10 is stubborn - depending on the heat treatment, getting rid of that burr can be an issue.

Re: CPM steels

The issue isn't being PM but having a lot of Vanadium. These steels are wear resistant.
You'll need diamonds for M390 and Magnacut. They will make life easier for the 3V.

Re: New Stone Line Shapton Rockstar

Hmm, these are cheaper than the Shapton glass with maybe more usable thickness? A lot cheaper. If they are the same stone as the Shapton Glass, I don't see a reason for anybody to buy the Glass unless they are in extreme weather conditions. A lot of bang for the buck. Too bad Mark only had one of e...

Re: Alternatives to CCK veggie cleaver(s)

I have to disagree about your statement regarding CCK. I made a typo. I meant to say that almost everything is thicker than the CCK. It's a laser. In fact that's why I compare surface area to weight - chuka's and nakiri's are closer enough to rectangular. So the more surface area to weight, the thi...

Almost everything is thinner than the CCK.
The Daovua is also a laser, but it lacks edge retention. You also have to be good with the belly.

I looked at a bunch of tall nakiris and chuka-bochos by comparing surface area to weight. The Yoshimitsu tall nakiris are your best bet.

Re: Best Stropping Compound (Not an Opinion)

Anyone try Jende Poly Diamond Emulsion? They have a fancy looking Nanocloth Ultra Strop which is supposed to work with it. A bit of an investment though. You'll want something grippy for the strop blocks if you have them on a bench - they are smooth plastic and will rotate and slide. Or put it in a...

Re: Enthralled by three rather different knives … talk to me

Everybody's avoiding telling you - eventually get all three. It's just a matter of when the budget recovers and it's a question of what order you get them in.

Re: Strops & Compounds advice

That above is my biggest obstacle in learning freehand sharpening....unless I go cut a concrete curb there's just not enough knives for me to sharpen because my knives don't require much sharpening. To remedy that I buy knives just to sharpen --which isn't exactly the wisest thing to do. And now I'...

Re: Strops & Compounds advice

Since budget is a factor, I suggest you try just a bare leather strop with what you have on hand. At the least it will deburr your edge. If you have enough for two strops, try some Green compound on one. You can find it for like $8 for a small block - that will last you a while. It's should be fine ...

I'm talking about electroplated diamond plates.
If Atoma is too much and you don't like the idea of DMT, Ultrasharp, Sharpal, & Eze-Lap are other name options. As I've said, I've had luck with no-name stones.

Re: Purchase advice needed for new stones

What do you mean by bonded stones?
I'm talking about the double sided diamond plates with a honeycomb pattern. They cut steel, so there is some abrasive there.

Re: Purchase advice needed for new stones

Well the Shaptons are going to have trouble with the K390 and S90V, just far too much Vanadium. However, I've been playing with low cost diamond stones this year, the no-name kind you find on Amazon and they do surprisingly well. Just don't use too much pressure. In the US you can get a double sided...

For soaking stones, I generally have them out on a rack for 2-3 days before putting them back in a box.
For a big stone like a Kohetsu, it's more like a week.

Re: Diamond Bench

I've been looking at low cost diamond stones as a recommendation for people who want to learn to sharpen, but don't want a big commitment. Mostly for EDC. And in my experience they eat through steel faster. Also they seem to last (need more time to know for sure) if used properly. Heavy pressure bei...

I forget to say, finer Shaptons glaze fast. I'd personally be inclined to get a Chosera 3K or 5K. The Naniwa Gouken Arata versions are lower cost, though not as thick.

Re: Oh no, another progression question

Some of it depends on taste, some of it depends on what you cut. So you will get a bunch of answers. With the Mercer (soft German steel in general), you might just want to go to stropping after the 1K. Really if you cut raw meat, a lot of people prefer an edge with more bite - mid grit then some str...
