The next tasmanian blackwood?

Hey guys, ive been working on something pretty cool lately. Depending how long you guys have been collecting, you may remember about 3-5 years ago when Tasmanian blackwood really came onto the knife making scene in a big way. Before, the go to curly wood was koa. But as you all know, koa prices have...

Re: Woods used for Japanese handles--advantages? disadvantages?

Honestly, most woods will work.

Traditional Ho wood/ magnolia does pick up stains, dirt and dust a lot faster than a nice rosewood or stabilized piece of wood, but all will technically make a useable handle!

Re: Video explaining wood

This was an absolutely fascinating video, thank you for posting this. Is that just regular varnish you're putting on those that make them look so vibrant or is that some special substance? Also, sort of unrelated, but the title of your post ("explaining wood") made me think of one of my f...

Re: Video explaining wood

Good video Ben. I know it's not very complicated but I think a video/explanation what is Stabilizing, why it's done and how exactly it's done would be cool. Definitely! I actually wrote my exit thesis for my chem degree on stabilizing. I have a video on ebony in the works, but stabilizing is next!

Re: What was your first job?

At 14 I started bugging the local wood shop until they offered me a job. I thought you were supposed to know everything before you started working there, so i memorized the wood database and every wood working book I could find. I sold wood and made furniture for for 4 years until I graduated highsc...

Re: Any coffee fans?

I would be interested but shipping is seemingly a killer. Your base price is great. I'm in NM and got $10 for estimated shipping which nearly doubles the cost. Can you check flat rate or other alternatives? thanks, Danny Unfortunately that is the flat rate shipping. I charge one rate for a package ...

Re: Any coffee fans?

Very generous of you, Ben. I Would be happy to give it a grind and pass it through the espresso machine to see how it turns out. When the current supply will dwindle by the end of November, I'll be sure to check it out. Maybe folks can post some response here on the thread :) Sounds great. I'd love...
