Re: Charity Knife Raffle for St. Judes

Based on what Lucas told me, there is an anodized titanium pin that holds it in place. You can kind of see it on the last pic I posted. Basically, you just tap the pin out and the handle will slide off. He beds the tang into the handle to ensure a perfect fit. The screws you see in the pics above ar...

Charity Knife Raffle for St. Judes

Hopefully this is okay to post here, and if it is not, then I apologize and the mods can delete the thread. Lucas Gumbiner (gumbinercustomknives on IG) is hosting a charity raffle with all of the proceeds going to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. He flew out here to California to collaborate w...

Re: Show us your new knife!

Slowly getting back into the knife game, and I seem to be on a bit of a copper kick lately so I jumped on the copper damascus nakiri that Jeff (Black Lotus) posted as soon as I saw it. The cladding is copper & 1084 with a 52100 core, and the handle is Tasmanian blackwood with a carbon fiber spac...

Re: Polishing, Kasumi Finish & Etching

We've missed seeing your awesome work Steve! Thanks Jeff! Hoping to get back to doing more polishing this year. I was just happy to see that I didn’t completely lose my skills 😂 So happy to see both you and nakneker back this week. Christmas and my birthday rolled into one... Thanks for letting us ...

Re: Polishing, Kasumi Finish & Etching

Has it really been almost 2 years since I last posted on here?!? Hope everyone has been doing well. Life has been busy since CoVid hit so my knife life dropped off during the ride. Got my first new kitchen knife since all this drama started. It’s a wrought iron clad 26c3 (aka spicy white) integral p...

Re: Black Lotus Charity Raffle

I had no idea that Sean posted this, but I wanted to thank everyone that contributed to the cause. The raffle is now closed, and we ended up raising $1500 for Villa Lobos pit Bull rescue. This is something that is near and dear to my wife and I so it really means a lot that we had so much support fr...

Re: WTS - Gumbiner Aogami 2 Wrought Iron Clad 239mm Gyuto

I have three Gumbiner knives, like Delmar mentioned his handle work is exceptional, so his talent with forging. He’s young too, I see this young man has having a very bright future in the knife world. I don’t mention him much for selfish reasons but I’ll post some of his work later this month when ...

Re: Show us your new handle

I've used black carbon fiber pins before. They work similar to micartas. Im guessing that's g10 maybe? Correct, the pins are G10. I didn’t wanna use micarta because I wanted there to be a little bit of shine, and I also wasn’t a fan of the layers that micarta would show. I do like micarta, but it w...

Re: Polishing, Kasumi Finish & Etching

The handle on that looks so clean :o Thanks. Lucas really does great work. He has done a lot of handles for my friends, but this is my first one from him. It was only the third or fourth western he has done, but you wouldn’t know it by looking at how clean his work is. He’s a true young up and come...

Re: Polishing, Kasumi Finish & Etching

Been a while since I last polished a knife, but I had to spa my Hiromoto AS 270 after getting it back. I sent it out to Lucas for a custom handle, and he was able to really bring my idea to life. The handle is spalted curly maple with black pins and a super comfy coke bottle shape. He was able to do...

Re: WTS: Takeda Classic Medium Gyuto

I will admit that this one was also nagging my mind... I wouldn’t have minded if this Takeda found its way to your home. You would have treated her right, but don’t worry...I’m still sorting through my knives, and there will surely be more for me to tempt you with in the coming weeks 😂 Haha. I'll h...

Sweet handle, nice work BTW.
Joe definitely killed it on the handle. It’s tough for me to let this one go, but as good as it is, it has been supplanted by the Kipp fishhook. Redundancy is a killer 🤦🏻‍♂️

Takeda Classic Medium Gyuto - SOLD!

It kind of pains me to do this, but I have way too many knives sitting around and not being used so I’ve decided to let a few go. The first will be my beloved Takeda classic medium gyuto. I have used it sparingly, and it has not seen a full sharpening progression. The last touch up consisted of 6k &...

Re: Show us your new knife!

Lucas Gumbiner W2 honyaki gyuto, right around 250mm. Pretty thin, but nice convexing for solid food release. The dude can sharpen too - great OOB edge...no need to touch up! Handle is tasmanian blackwood with curl and sapwood, micarta and 3,000 year old bog oak. I asked him to tone down the polish ...

Try using this grit chart to sort out the micron equivalent for your pads and then for the stones you are transitioning from.
