Well, I just found out today that a close sharpening partner was found dead. I guess these things come in bunches.
As I find out more I'll let you know. He had an impressive collection

Rip my friend. You will be missed.

I need a break from death.,.

For what it's worth I was able to get the entire contents of her sealed bag of ashes into the urn. Yes a practical matter, but she seems at peace for now. My thanks to Tulip Cremation for their fine work including their [times Roman] engraving -"she made my life a joy to live"

Darian, did you get these? How about a report? This set should surely get a serious sharpener going along well.

Re: My wife passed away on 7/12/2021

Perhaps the last posting. I finally got an urn to put her ashes into assuring her a dignified container. It contains her birth and death date and a short but fitting quote. I'll post some pictures. 20210830_134505.jpg 20210830_134543.jpg This is a sad posting as it represents a final resting place f...

Re: Petty knife

I have a 150 Nubatama black steel petty that I like. It is very sharp and stays that way.

I keep it at a 16k edge.

Re: Just ordered a Sukenari HAP 40…do I need new stones?

No, I don't use the 150 all the time. I maintain my knives like you do, usually either a quick session on anything from 6-10k or more likely a nanocloth strop with Ken's .10 Micron pdp emulsion. You know I've had this stuff for 5 months and it's the same color, no separation at all like some other ...

Re: Just ordered a Sukenari HAP 40…do I need new stones?

The platinums are precise stones that leave good edges with minimal excessive steel wear. I use these stones a lot on a wide range of steels. You may get satisfactory edges with what you have. Experiment. We can always improve from what you are doing now. Give me a call for more details.

Try using what you have and we can improve your stone selection later.

Let us know how you like your choices. I understand those shipping and customs charges are pretty rough.

Re: what's your favorite 5000 grit stone?

I like the 5k Nubatama but also prefer the 6k platinum - faster and more efficient. I also like the 5k Chocera and dislike the 5k Shapton pro for its lack of feedback.

Re: Steamer Clams in Steamy California

Just seeing this post! What a wonderful and thoughtful thing to do!!
This was GREAT seafood! What a highpoint for my day this was. The tajine steamed the fresh clams perfectly and the teflon pan cooked the scallops perfectly. Of course Nikita got her share too.

THANK YOU!!!

Ive been using an Okudo suita (natural stone) for occasional touchups. A great combination between knife and stone for very nice edges.

Re: USPS Shipping Delays

Not to get too off topic but this whole thing is frustrating. They sent EMTS to recescitate her to no effect on the front lawn, removing her clothes completely from her cold body. I understand this but not being charged $2100 for this, but leaving her undraped body lying there afterwards and leaving...

I never signed for them! They were just dumped on the porch and were shipped priority mail EXPRESS. ENRAGED? HELL YES. These aren't replaceable.

Re: How to travel with waterstones

For thicker stones - like the 50 mm thick Nubatama stones or green bricks of joy, you can 'split' the Shapton cases along their seam and hold it together with a Velcro strip or rubber band. Very useful and no mildew.

Re: How to travel with waterstones

Stones should travel dry. Wet stones look like c4 explosives to your TSA agents. You can tell if a stone is truly dry by the sound it makes when it is hit by a pencil. I can describe this in more detail. I learned this trick from Tanaka-san may he RIP. Dont put wet stones back in their cardboard box...
