Re: question about grit rating
Although it might answer a basic question you must also realize that things like abrasive type, stone hardness, binder, abrasive concentration, abrasive quality and how the steel reacts with all of those factors will greatly alter the outcome. The 2000 grit range is my favorite, I have a handful of ...

Re: BESS sharpness testing-any users?
And FYI, I still have the original testing unit if anyone wants to give it a go. Message me if interested, wouldn't be the first time I sent it out to a forum member.

Re: BESS sharpness testing-any users?
0, 30s and 40s? That sounds like a malfunctioning tester. I think actual double edged shaving razors clock around 50s BESS when new, and those are paper-thin blades, let alone edges. I’m not an expert, but from what I’ve read those numbers seem much too low. I was selected as a tester for the origi...

Re: BESS sharpness testing-any users?
I have the original testing unit and my conclusion was... the test was for a much less skilled sharpener.
My machine edges were in the 30's and 40's while my hand edges beyond 4k would rank a 0. You could also greatly change the test outcome with varying edge finish, polish and stropping techniques.

Re: Naniwa vs Shapton
I like my Shapton Glass for wood working tools over all other stones. The Naniwa stones get too muddy IMO and tend to float the tool making sharpening difficult.
The Glass stones are also fast and consistent making sharpening easier and less time consuming.

Re: Stones for PM edc folders
When dealing with PM folders I stick to my Coarse and Fine DMT, high V PM steels perform at their best with a nice toothy edge. A little tip, I keep a UF Spyderco ceramic handy and it's nice to have for stubborn burr removal. The Ceramic doesn't do much to the high V steels but helps knock down the ...

Re: Stones for PM edc folders
Diamond or CBN, any abrasive short of that will only yield ok results at best. Even the Shapton Glass stones fall short when dealing with PM steels that have 4% or greater Vanadium content.

Re: Storing Shapton Glass Stones
I have a wire rack from Home Depot that I have layed some microfiber towels on and after I'm done with the stone I dry it and lay it face done on the rack so the stone itself is in contact with the microfiber. I have about 10 or so Glass stones I have kept this way for a couple years now.

Re: Amazing coarse edge
I use a DMT Coarse followed by a strop loaded with 1 micron diamond compound. I use this pretty much exclusively for PM steels in folding knives and it has shown great performance in not only cutting but edge retention. It's also much easier to strop back sharp and can be done more before needing a ...

Re: chip deba sharpening advice
Jason, do you use a belt sander on Deba knives ever? Yes, but only if the chips are too big to remove with a stone or if the blade road needs a regrind. Sometimes if the edge is thick after removing the damage I will grind just the hard metal avoiding the soft iron and upper section of the blade ro...

Re: chip deba sharpening advice
I'm not a big fan of grinding the blade road to remove chips, you can really distort the geometry that way. Instead, hold the blade 90 degrees to the stone and cut into the stone like slicing bread. This will remove any and all edge damage and give you a fresh line to work from. It's the same for an...

I was just looking over his videos and I think this one really shows Sharpening a yanagi without all the blade road polishing.

Re: How to sharpen a single bevel knife.
I like seeing other sharpeners progressions and his is very similar to mine minus the natural stones. I use the SG 120, SG220, NP400, Kohetsu 800 & 2k then I finish with the Suehiro Cerax 6k. Sometimes I will trade out the Kohetsu for a 1k Naniwa Gouken Kurouto and NP3000. Yes, he used a microbe...

Re: stone recommendations for axe sharpening
Typically, you start with a file to set the geometry then move on to something like an Axe sharpening puck. Lansky and Norton both make good ones.
For chopping wood it's best to have a somewhat polished edge so after the above I would recommend a good power buff or some finer stones.

Re: Sharpening 20cv
At 4% Vanadium the Glass stone will start to give you troubles at 500 and up. You could probably get to about 1k but it would have been less painful to just use the diamond plate at that point. At 4% Vanadium the carbide content becomes enough that the interaction with the abrasive can be a real iss...

Do you want a professional knife grinder or do you want something to grind out chips and reset edges?
