Re: Belt thinning
Does the building need 3 phase? I thought it refers to the motor strictly so that it can be used with a VFD. I have a 2hp 3 phase motor with kabac VFD that I'm running using a quick systems 220V converter no problems.

Re: Belt thinning
Looks awesome! I would definitely consider a good 3 phase motor that has at least 1.5hp and VFD. If you can run 220V then 2-3 hp is nice. I got a Reeder grinder that's pretty decent and comes with a horizontal tilt feature but I don't use it. To save some money, you may consider buying a frame with ...

Re: Creating an S-Grind?
I would get a piece of 2x4 wood, sand one side until is has a 3 foot or 4 foot radius, then wrap with sand paper and start sanding. Let us know how it goes!

WTS- Hideriyama Stone
Selling a lightly used hideriyama stone I recently got. Wanted to compare this to my ohira and I like the ohira better so no real need for this one. Large stone, comes with wood base and already laquered sides. Stone has a small crack that was fixed by the manufacturer or dealer I got it from. I est...

Re: Forgers vs. Stock removers
As a hobbyist knife maker, I can kinda get your analogies (I know nothing about pottery). In a sentence perhaps forging can be like going to the riverbed and making your own pottery clay, whereas stock removal is like buying premixed clay. I can see where you are going with different methods of firi...

Polishing and Metallurgical Effects
I was messing around with polishing my yanagiba and came across some cool metallurgical effects in the iron (prob banding of some sort). Used my Ohira suita and Blue #2 yanagiba. https://i.ibb.co/Yjd66G1/20200527-161237.jpg Anyone else come across some cool surface details while polishing their knif...

Re: Handle-maker (wa) recommendations wanted
Unfortunately I don't have any experience with any of the custom handle makers here, but as a hobbyist, the materials you choose will definitely affect the POB of your knife. Generally, all wa handles have fairly light weight wood handles that throw the POB pretty forward. If you were to go with an...

I used Shapton kuromaku 1000 grit, king 4000 grit, then a hideriyama and some fine polishing with shinsei iron oxide powder.

And she's fixed. Bit of elbow grease and playing around with stones. Blade road and shinogi is not the most perfect line but good enough for use.

So I get in my new Yangiba. Edge needs work as usual and blade is bent and torqued. Expected. So what do I do? Sharpen it a bit to find out where the blade torques and put it in my wood torquing jig. I apply force and hear tink! First thought: F*****(k!!! New blade was only 1 hr old... I am so disap...

Re: Show us your knife collection.
S90v is a pretty decent edge holding steel. A complete bear to work with though. Personally, I don't like my Kitaoka that much. F&F is super rough and mine was warped so I can't get a good edge on the ura. Mine might be a lemon though.

Re: Show us your new knife!
Went the 180 route today, Yoshikane SKD hammered. Looks like a baby Kono skd. Congrats! I just ordered one as well! Got a few new knives since last year. Two Takedas! Great work thinning the edge! That's the one thing I didn't find optimal on my takeda back in the day. The nakiri I ordered directly...
