Re: Hard(er) coarse stone?
.....for damaged edges I "love" my Nubatama Black Bamboo 180... ...I go from the Black Bamboo to the Shapton Glass 500. How has that progression been working for you? In my ignorance, it seems like quite the micron jump. But then again, I am new to the realm of whetstones π Edited to add:...

Re: New to sharpening advices
Being new to freehand sharpening on stones, I can whole heartedly agree! I dove head first, in regard to purchasing a Frankenstein set of stones. Ranging from 150 grit to 8k. I first started on my Naniwa Chosera 800 (~1k grit JIS), for several sharpenings. Then said stone + the 2k GBofJ on a few kni...

Maybe my eyes are just not what they used to be; but (to me) it looks like severe rolling of the edge, more so, than chipping.

It will be a while before I can budget in a real J-knife
But I scored this cheapy $50 knife for an additional 25% off. Not bad, for $37.50

Re: stone recommendations for axe sharpening
.....Would someone notice a difference between 5k edge and a Lansky puck after chopping up a hardwood log? Jason, even with something as "crude" as a splitting maul, splitting rounds, one can tell the difference between a 240 edge and a 1k+ and polished edge. Even more so with an axe. To ...

If not this exact model; my belt grinder looks near exactly like this one: 2e13d0f6aa4c47912492d0b2bd7daabd.jpg I removed a few pieces, and made some minor modifications to it. It can use 1" or 2" belts. The armature can be adjusted to one's liking. The 6" disc was not used very often...

Re: Rusty Knife project.
Ben... Back story: Several years ago, I moved back in with my parents, to pay off a huge debt and recover from a failed marriage. They had moved onto a small piece of property that they rented (still there), attached to 70 acres. Things needed fixing and sharpening. So I accumulated some tools and r...

Regarding buffers..... "Know thyself" "Respect the tool" I used to use 2x48" belt grinder on knives, edge leading. I also used 10" buffing wheels, loaded with compound, for same knives. I never forget the time I was buffing out my BRK Golok! I'm don't remember exactly w...
