Re: Your typical progression?

Currently, although not all stones are used in every session

atoma 140 -> gesshin 400 -> gesshin 2000 -> gesshin 4000 -> natural at LV 2.5 -> natural LV 4-5

or

atoma 140 -> jns 300 -> jns 800 or 10000 -> jns blue aoto or red aoto -> jns 6000 -> natural LV 4

Re: Shapton Glass 500 availablity

The double thick 500 is in stock and that is the only one that counts! Buy that one and don't look back. That said, there are always alternates as you put it. But the SG 500 is one of my favorite stones in that grit range. Edit: To add to this I just noticed a few sites no longer even offer some gr...

Re: What do you want?

I would like to see more sheath knife and folder offerings from some of the manufacturers. I know you did some of these before and I assume they were not great sellers. Outside of Arizona Customs there are very few sites featuring Japanese blade smiths in the US offering outdoor or EDC knives... +1...

Re: What knives and/or stones have just not sit well with you? And why??

Kit: That purchase was about three or four years ago so perhaps you are correct. I could never correlate my experiences with the constant recommendation for the line. Luckily I did not give up and found that experience to be more of an aberration than a standard. The purchase was off of Amazon as I ...

Re: What knives and/or stones have just not sit well with you? And why??

I agree with the statement on the Beston 500. A damp pile of sand. The Bester 1200 is still a good standard mid-grit stone in my opinion. When I started looking into kitchen knives I went with the standard recommendation on many sites and picked up a Tojiro DP. I did not buy the knife from this site...

Shapton Stones

Is there any update on when some of the Shapton glass or Pro stones will be available again? Seems that they are out of stock every where I look.

Re: Synthetic Aoto

I have both stones and the real difference is the level of hardness. The red is a softer stone more in line with the JNS 800. The blue speckled 2000 is a much harder stone and has a feel much closer to the JNS 1000. Both perform very well. If you want a natural Aoto you have already found one of the...

Reminds me of what Murray Carter states in his sharpening classes: it is 90% about your ability and 10% about the hardware.

Re: New to sharpening, looking for recommendations

+1 on the above and the CKTG set. If you want to save some money you could start with the Bester 1200 and Suehiro Rika 5k along with the CLTG flattening plate. You do not need a stone holder to start out. There are a number of videos on sharpening on Youtube. I follow the methods shown by Murray Car...

Re: WTB Finishing Stone above 6k

Near $100 would be the 8000 Naniwa Snow White. The 8000 grit Gesshin is also a great stone and one Jon recommends as a follow up to the 4000 or 6000 grit Gesshins. That stone is OOS and will bust your budget by $20. I have both and, for me, both work well in my Gesshin as well as JNS professions. An...
