Re: Too far gone?

Like I said, I have plenty of low-grit sandpaper. Is that where to start if I actually decide to tackle this project? Is the knife worth the hours this will probably take?

Too far gone?

Here's a knife my brother gave me in hopes I could fix it up now that I'm sharpening knives. It's pretty far gone. Too far gone? If it's still salvageable, what progression would I do to restore it? My sharpening tools do not include a belt sander, but I do have a bunch of sandpaper, diamond benchst...

Re: Am I doing it wrong?

Okay, the knife is dialed in. I put a very acute angle on the flat side (probably less than 5 degrees). To do it, I used (very sparingly) 2000 and 4000 diamonds, then an 8000 shapton pro. I then polished the new flat side bevel and the blade edge on a leather strop with green paste. It's wicked, wic...

Re: Am I doing it wrong?

Halfdana: thanks for your response. I'll try to answer your question about what sharpening techniques I've used on the flat-side. I just put the knife flat down on my fine stone (Shapton Pro 8000) every once and a while and move up and down the stone with the blade perpendicular to the stone. My kni...

Re: Am I doing it wrong?

Thanks, folks. I really appreciate all the great advice. Halfdana, you're right, the knife is the 160mm FH. In my hands, the knife feels mundane, especially compared to my other Japanese knives. I'm sure it didn't help that I f**ked it up by thinning the damn thing so much, but even out of the box I...

Re: Am I doing it wrong?

So I think I figured it out with help from one of the guys I watch on YouTube who asked me to send him photos of the knife in question. Apparently this knife has a hamaguri edge, so now I just need to sharpen it that way. problem solved!

Re: Am I doing it wrong?

Hi - I'm the original poster. I appreciate everyone's advice. I'm sharpening a new knife. It's a Hattori VG10. When I got it, it seemed to have two bevels on the right side: one from the shinogi line down to very near the edge, then a much greater angle that comprised the actual edge. I marked from ...
