Old knives

Post by cedarhouse » Sun Jun 03, 2018 9:31 pm

My wife and I spend a long weekend in Kansas City a few months back. While there, we visited the Arabia Steamboat Museum. The Arabia went down in minutes on the Missouri River in 1865. Because the wreck was buried in silt almost immediately, the dry goods on board were incredibly well preserved. Here are two pictures of some of the kit that caught my eye.

Obviously all carbon steel - what a wonder to hear that such things would not have rusted out of shape over a century and a half! Silt or no silt!

I should have taken a photo of the tools. They had saws, axes, chisels...all looked ready to use.

It really is amazing all that stuff survived.
