Over the holidays, I realized I needed a hammer to hang Christmas stockings, so I went to my local tool shop. The clerk was very helpful and knowledgeable of the subtle nuances of each tool and it came down to two different selections. One, he claimed, told the history of everyone involved of every hammer ever made, and came with a free fragment of the soul of the man who forged said hammer. The other would simply out hammer all other hammers with complete indifference to whatever nail might get in it's way. I went with the tool with the soul of a tool.
I've always found discussion of souls in the knife realm to be entertaining; harmless fun with little to no basis beneath the surface. I'm not trying to start a theological debate, but I'm firmly on the side of every tool has an equal amount of soul inside it. None.
As an unabashedly soulless man, I resonated quite well with this soulless knife. My years of reading Camus to understand the wisdom of indifference, and the absurdity of the universe translate quite well to my experience in the short time I've had.
This knife is completely indifferent to whatever food product gets in it's way. It simply doesn't care or hesitate, it will cut it with the supreme confidence of the universe.
On a more practical note, I use and love Aogami Steel, and will say without hesitation that R2 will hold an edge longer than AS. Sure, Aogami gets sharp with more ease, but none of that matters on a cutting board.
I guess the only thing I didn't like was the handle, it felt kinda like a hammer.

Bravo! That last line has my sides hurting.
And I couldn't agree more. I really feel you encompassed everything the ol' Kamo is all about.

This knife's existence clearly and profoundly precedes its essence. It exists. It cuts cleanly and dutifully. It stayed sharp. I used the butt of the handle to smash garlic. As if it were a hammer. The garlic was smashed.
My own existence is more precariously balanced as to be is to do. The knife and I did --- together. Humor is sometimes mentioned as a path to the soul the Kamo was enlightening for me. It made me laugh giddily -- first time out of the box it sliced a tomato without hands. Approximately 5 hours of board time later with nothing more than a leather strop -- it still sliced tomato with no hands. Nice. If being is becoming the Kamo became what it already was.
Beauty can also be a path to the soul filling the void between being and nothingness. The Kamo is beautiful and enriched my existence for the short time it and I shared the temporal space of my kitchen.
