Yahiko R2 vs. more expensive Takamura?

Post by ChefKnivesToGo »

Hi Mark,

Is the yahiko r2 gyuto a true laser? I'm looking for a budget(ish) 210 laser to test out to see if lasers are for me. Initially the takamura R2 caught my eye as it is so often recommended and I have been wanting to try a powdered steel. But if the yahiko is comparable I'd save the 30 bucks and go for the yahiko.

Thanks,
Craig

Craig, I found the Yahiko R-2 210mm Gyuto to be a very good performing knife, but the Takamura R-2 210 Gyuto is an even better performer and more of a full on laser.

1) The Takamura has a bit slimmer handle and it's a little lighter and more nimble than the Yahiko, but not by a bunch.

2) Fit & finish is a bit better on the Takamura, whereas the Yahiko might need some sanding on the choil and the spine OOTB.

3) The Yahiko Micarta handle is also more bulletproof than the Takamura handle.
