Back in the spring I got my mother in laws a Takamura Chromax 210mm gyuto as a thank you present for all that they do for our family. They love it and for Christmas this year I'm thinking of following it up with a petty. There are pretty simple parameters for the knife, so I'll skip the form.
130-150mm petty
Stainless
Priced under $120, preferably well under
Doesn't just look like a Wustof
They cook a fair amount and have average knife skills. When I was at their place at the end of June the Takamura had no chips in it and the edge was still going strong. The Takamura is a good looking knife and stands out as special among the collection of Wustof and other German knives that they have. The main ones I've considered are

If a petty doesn't work out this year, the fall back gift is a strop kit to help them maintain the Takamura in between visits (when I sharpen their knives). Thanks!

Re: Petty for MILs
I say stick with the Takamura .......
Aesthetically they go well together, handles are similar, the Migaki is just not as distressed looking
Performance wise the Takamura is a superb cutter
Edge retention is also amazing
We have all five of the Migaki R2 Mark offers, a couple of them were chippy out out of the box, not bad, but a couple small chips. Sharpened them out and have had no issues at all.

Re: Petty for MILs
Takamura obviously will outperform the other two, but it is not quite as tough as the Kanehide.
The Takayuki is in between. Got to wonder if a wood handle will hold up for the inlaws, though.
I'd rec a Konosuke Swedish if were in stock ...

Re: Petty for MILs
Why not stay with Takamura? The petty is going to get less abuse, so though R-2 is a bit more delicate than Chromax, it should hold up fine. I actually use Takamura R-2 130 petty and 210 gyuto as my primary go-to's without any issues with either the blades nor the handles in typical household kitchen use. Great lower maintenance option than fully reactive home use.
