Ko Bocho style Pass around
Carter and I have come up with something pretty unique to pass around. Carter's Subforum can be found here: viewforum.php?f=25
This knife is a collaboration. I design and grind/ finish the blade. Carter did the Heat Treat and handle.
The Steel is New Jersey Steel Baron's Stainless Clad 52100. I did a bit of cold forging to get the pattern.
The geometry is pretty thin at the edge...I still need to sharpen and dial in the heel and tip. I am guessing this will be best suited to home use when you have time to go slow and careful and just enjoy the process.
Cutting with this little guy is meant to be a therapeutic experience
I will let Carter elaborate on the handle materials.
Pass around rules:
Id like to limit the pass around to those members with over 100 posts, 1 week or so at a time, maybe 6 or so slots. If there is more interest maybe we can do another round.
I realize the shape is not for everyone but this was a good practice for bigger things to come
1. Carter
2. Timos
3. Robstreperous
4. Gopherbroke
5. Datster
6. Easilver
7. J David
8. Mauichef
Round 2:
1. Toddnmd
2. Cutuu
3. raleighcook15
I would be happy to pass around to a few more people after this list is complete. I also dont mind if you have no plans to buy a knife from me or Carter and just want to try for fun. That is totally fine

Re: Ko Bocho style Pass around
Thanks Tim....post is great. The handle is Kingwood with honey horn and a nickel-silver spacer.....thought a simple and traditional design would work well with the rustic style of the blade. The blade was heat treated using my standard recipe for the core steel of 52100...did not notice any real difference between the clad steel and the straight 52100. This has not been tested, but should be right at 62HRC.

Tim,
can you elaborate on the blade / finish? It is 52100 clad in SS, the finish makes it look like there are more layers, is that etching, forced patina? This blade could hang on a wall as art.

The steel is 410SS wrapped around a core of 52100. Tim did etch the blade....think he used ferric chloride.

Re: Ko Bocho style Pass around
the pattern in the blade comes from manipulating the layers with a hammer. I am not an expert but as far as I understand. A thin layer of nickel is used between core steels and cladding to help with welding and prevent carbon migration. This particular steel seem to have a couple extra layers in there. It was a nice surprise as it really gives some added depth and complexity to the patterns that are achievable.

I'd be interested to get in on this passaround if there is a spot available.

Re: Ko Bocho style Pass around
Ok , I have messed a round with this blade enough. I will be sending to Rob next week. Over all, I liked this blade for in hand work...I feel like it really shine processing fruit and veggie quickly to hand to my wife while we are making juice. I loved it for quickly coring apples. The biggest drawback for this blade is the surface is so flat it is real sticky. I will improve this with a hammered finish on my next effort.
