Re: Recent Work
This is a 180mm funayuki made and designed for one of our CKTG members. The steel is 52100 hardened to 62HRC. The blade has a nice distal taper and is quite thin behind the edge. The handle is Oregon black oak burl with accents of 3,400 yr old bog oak, mastodon ivory, honey buffalo horn, and nickel-silver.
Thanks for looking.
Thanks for looking.
Re: Recent Work
That santoku looks great, looks quite lasery!
Oak burl is awesome but seems to get little love on handles. Are the black spots voids/inclusions that are resin or epoxy filled? I have some oak burl with a lot of character that I think would be interesting to leave the voids unfilled.

Re: Recent Work
Thanks guys.....the newer version is more tapered at the tip less of a bull nose and a pointier tip....a more traditional funayuki profile.
Iv'e had that oak burl for a while and always liked it....surprised it took a long time to be adopted by someone. Most voids get filled with CA...the voids on this handle are minimal...the dark areas aren't big voids as it appears in the photos. I have had some cutoff pieces that would make a cool handle with a rough or live edge back end of the handle, but I have never made one....though I think with the right wood and placement of the "defective area" it would be fun. My hesitation with a customer handle is more related to sanitary issues....voids or rough edges would be hard to clean thoroughly...might become a germ pit.

Re: Recent Work
Carter, since AC is going on vacation soon, feel free to just ship the knives to me. Man, those things turned out gorgeous! I really like how that reindeer horn turned out on the KS. Beautiful work as usual.

Re: Recent Work
Thanks, Carter for the beautiful and amazing handles. I love how these turned out and can’t wait to get a hold of them. I will enjoy them immensely. Thanks again for your patience with all my questions and for your well thought out plan for the handles. Truly a work of art!
Re: Recent Work
Steve is just pulling your leg. At least I hope that he is. Lol.
I should be getting them today and will definetely be bringing them with me when I leave.

Giving a 150mm tall petty the 320 grit spa treatment this morning. This blade is for our great friends and a special couple in Miami.
