Thanks Jeff....it's kind of fun, but also goes against my nature...destroying something that I made.

I was bummed on one of my first cutting tests about a year ago with a different blade. I cut a #12 bolt that was sitting on my workbench and it took a big chunk out of the blade, I mad/sad and confused about the performance, I tried cutting nails and the blade when through them with no problem or blade damage....it was later that I figured out that it was a hardened bolt my son had taken off his Jeep....felt better after that.

Not a lot of knife work past 2 days. Jose and I are rebuilding the big raised bed garden....planting tomorrow. Jose is digging out some of last year's strawberries, we are relocating them to the berry patch.

Here are the finished Hinoura River Jump's. The handles are gaboon ebony with walrus ivory. These handles are shaped like many of the stock Hinoura's, octagonal on top and round on the bottom.

I love the shape! I think we’ll have to do that for the next knife I send over.

It is a nice shape...seems to work better on the petty sized handles. They are a bit more difficult and time consuming to make. The 3 Stainless Hinoura's above are for the same customer, they have the same shaped handles.

They are really cool knives, I'm lucky that I get to work with some really top notch blades.

I have a couple hunting knives with walrus ivory. Beautiful handle material. You want to make sure he keeps up with the maintenance on the ivory to prevent cracking, you probabaly already know that. I actually had 7 knives made with the ivory handles that I gave as gifts to some friends, the two guys who ignored taking care of the ivory had a crack develop. Everyone who kept up with it hasnt had any issues.

Beautiful work Carter.

Thanks Guys, appreciate the comments.

I finished these knives this week. The 245mm gyuto is headed to Mark for some testing/feedback and then probably to a few other guys on a little passaround. The 165mm petty is a customer knife, it still needs a saya. The petty is a nice little knife, it is tall enough to do some board work and the K-tip is good for delicate jobs....think I am going to make one for myself.

Just a few shots from what is going on in the shop today....kind of boring, but the process......

Handle components being fitted and a saya glued up in the background.
Image

Cutting buffalo horn for spacers and an end cap on the Portaband.
Image

Knives out of the oven, this was the 4th and final stage of the normalizing process...the temps ranged from 1650F to 1450F, the blades were air cooled after each session. Next they will be ground closer to a final dimension and then back in the oven for the hardening heat treat and then tempering, before being ground for the last time.

Thanks for looking.
