Hello,
how did it go with the knives you guys ordered at bargain prices? I'm curious to know since the seller keep on having auctions of the same kind of knives and the reviews on e-bay are mostly positive. I would like to add though, that some of the knives have a sticker very similar to the sticker put on knives manufactured by Yoshihiro - see for example: https://global.rakuten.com/en/store/hin ... kunm-165n/, or: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Sakai-Japanese ... SwrFJZ02Mp. If this is the origin of the knives I guess they are neither blue steel nor hand made, but they might still be worth the price. Also, if they indeed are not made by the smith the seller advertises, isn't this bordering on a scam slandering them, i.e. Tomita who is now deceased?

Is Tomita-san now passed?? I've considered ordering 1 or 2 others from him since posting this initial thread. For my part, though the blade was rough it sharpened up extremely nicely and in all honesty I do believe the quoted AS to be accurate - I've only stropped the thing every once in a while and it keeps an edge as well or better than some of my best knives. It has become the go-to quick tomato knife. I find I reach for it FAR more often than I would have though... so by that metric, it was a huge win.wankelmodig wrote: ↑Wed Feb 07, 2018 5:53 am Hello,

Re: Tomita-san knives
I know this thread was from earlier this year, but this same seller has yanagiba knives listed as Blue Steel 2 and made by Yoshikazu Ikeda.
Can that be legitimate? I see his knives at much higher prices. And if I posted in the wrong place - apologies. I just now joined the forums.

I have a few nakiris from Tomita left in the office and I’ll put a couple of them on the website. I need to sharpen them first and I’m taking one of them home.
It’s depressing to count all the Japanese guys I’ve dealt with that have passed away. Tomita San was a nice man.

I received 2 knife( December 2018) from Tomita how excellent the blade sharpness was after I sharpened then 1000 grit and 6000 grit and strop it on the news paper. They are better than my Tojiro gyuto and yaniba. It shave hair right away after 10 minutes of whetstone. Best at 1/8 the price I paid for my Tojiro's.ChefKnivesToGo wrote: ↑Sat Dec 01, 2018 2:18 pm I have a few nakiris from Tomita left in the office and I’ll put a couple of them on the website. I purchased a few knives from this seller on ebay. I purchased the knives because super blue steel is usually more expensive and for the price, would be good to practice on. When I saw the seller, did some research on Tomita and landed here.
The seller said he would combine shipping he didnt. Could be a language barrier, could be they make their money in shipping fees. doesnt matter. cool knives for the price.
I purchased a Deba and a Funayaki both claimed from Tomita. One was in plastic packaging and has characters on the blade, and the other does not have character and was wrapped in cardboard.
I am a total newb, but the knives seem sharp. The deba is super rough around the edges, and the funayaki is less rough. I also bought a yanagiba supposedly made by Yoshikazu Ikeda.
I have no idea how to determine the truth of any of this. is there a test to determine the type of steel?
anyhow, if anyone wants additional information i'll be happy to provide details.
Thank you for having this forum, very helpful.

Re: Tomita-san knives
I purchased this knife from eBay, a 135mm Petty by Tomita. The only other nice kitchen knife i have is a Tojiro 180mm Gyuto.
It had a bit of a rough edge when it arrived, but after less than 20 minutes on my stones i had a pretty decent edge. I immediately used it for some light veggie prep and it is a very nice knife. It is a solid piece of steel! Feels pretty balanced, the thickness and heft i guess helps those of us with a bit less refined technique.
I have japanese folder in Blue #2 and this feels about the same on the stones, so could very well be Super Blue. It could have had an asymmetric grind but to my untrained eye it looked pretty symmetrical, at least close to it.
All in all, i'm happy with this knife.
