R2/SG2
I’ve heard this steel is beyond the standard. Does anyone have a r2/sg2 they use and how do you like it?

Re: R2/SG2
I totally agree with the vote for Tanaka’s R2. I’ve tried a few different R2 knives, and my Tanaka Ironwood is by far my favorite. Takamura R2 is a close second in my book.

I have Shiro Kamo and Shibata in R2 and both take outstanding edges, although the grind is as big a factor as the steel. The laser grind on the Shibata bunka is as good or better than anything else I've used.
Re: R2/SG2
I have a Makoto Sakura in SG2. Thin and cuts well, but came with a substandard edge. I haven't been especially impressed by edge retention. I have a white 2 knife from Yahiko that seems to be very well done as the edge retention is almost as good as the Makoto. I haven't found the SG2 particularly difficult to sharpen.

I have the shibata kashima in r2 and it is a super light and get super sharp really easy. The edges are really thin to begin. Heard Kramer sg2 take a little longer to sharpen. The still is great and the retention is pretty good too

R2/SG2 is an excellent steel. Not sure what "beyond the standard" means...

Re: R2/SG2
I have a Shibata 180 bunka and a Shibata Kashima 240 gyuto both in R2.
I find R2 is a very easy PM steel to sharpen (similar to say AEBL / 13C26), it takes a great edge and holds onto it for a long time. Shibata does a very good rendition of his R2 in terms of heat treatment, tempering etc. I would normally sharpen this steel at say 13 dps, but found that they cam from Shibata at 9.5 dps and easily held that in my home environment. So I think that it's a great, no fuss knife steel

I can also say that the Tanaka R2 is a true gem....love it very much, bought three of them
Re: R2/SG2
I agree R2 is great, I have a Itou 240 Damascus and the Tanaka 240 and couldn't be happier.
Re: R2/SG2
A bit of an offshoot question, please forgive me;
Are those Tanaka R2's kanji engraved or lasered on?

Re: R2/SG2
It depends. The older models were all engraved or had nothing. I have been told the ones without kanji are from Shigeki Tanaka.
The new R2 wa handled are laser.
