Help with an opinion
Hi Guys,
I need some help with this. Mr Okada in Echizen offered me several of these little kogatanas. I rejected all but this one even though I wouldn't mind having others: https://www.chefknivestogo.com/okwh2ko.html
He came back and asked me why and I told him I didn't like the way the blades were ground on the others. Here is what I'm objecting to. I'm wondering if you agree and should I ask him to alter it so the edge extends to the heel? Or am I just making trouble?

Re: Help with an opinion
I can’t think of a situation where having an unground heel would help. I’ve never liked sharpening anything with protrusions complicating the motions. I don’t think you are wrong.
Re: Help with an opinion
Yep, those little bits just make things complicated for use and sharpening. Besides they look goofy.

Agreed. If I was in the market for something like that the heel would probably cause me to keep hunting.

The one you did accept is, however, quite cool. Looks like a nice gift option, and then some

Good decision, that heel sucks.

100% agree.
That heel is completely unnecessary in my opinion. It would get me looking elsewhere.

Thank you.
I’ll offer to buy them if he changes the designs and adds more usable heels.

Re: Help with an opinion
it looks to me like it would function kind of like a guard, preventing something you are cutting from sliding as easily onto your hand.

Re: Help with an opinion
On that account, I could imagine adding a notch between the guard and the actual blade, to make for easier sharpening.
Kinda like this, or like that.

Re: Help with an opinion
I agree - I would remove the plunge line and extend the edge to the full length if the blade. I would also round off the handle and probably replace the handle material with something more durable.

is there any way he can include something that would make this easy to carry around or leave around the house without getting accidently injured if it falls on the floor

Re: Help with an opinion
Is the heat treat uniform all the way to the edge? Also what about just doing this redo yourself? Would that be cost effective?

I like the idea of no heal, but maybe a concavity that is toward the handle to protect ones hand? I do like the simple rustic handle. Thanks for bringing these options forward Mark!
