Magnetic knife strip on backsplash ok??

Post by jameyhaz »

I'm considering mounting a magnetic knife holder on the backspash above the stove. I would mount it higher up away from the cooking grates. Is this a bad idea?? My concerns are condensation, smoke, fumes, etc. Will this wreck havoc on the carbon steel or Wa handles??? This is not my kitchen but it best represents what I'm talking about. Thanks!!

Bad Idea! stuff will splatter, grease will coat and knives will be hard to get to, and if you drop one into onto the stove or a stove grate omg, just dont do it.

Just thinking of all the grease would be enough to make me not do it. I would have to clean every knife after every other meal.

Don't. There has to be a better option.

Perhaps consider placing these on the side of your fridge. Definitely not as photographed.

Condensation will absolutely wreak havoc, I have a strip near, not above, that I have to be mindful about. I can’t imagine how much of a pain it would be directly in the line of fire.

I wish I had room for a magnetic bar, but I don't. Instead, I made room in a drawer and made a storage system. Is that an option? Others use blocks, but it's hard if you have anything bigger than a 240, and even then it can be a challenge.

Have you done this? I am in a similar situation where I just moved into a new house and am struggling to find a good spot for my mag bar.

I've done this. Works well. It was posted by another member a while ago in the show us your kitchen thread

Amazon linked product held around 5 knives each and never had an issue with knives falling off or magnet falling off the fridge.

Ha, it was I who shared that photo last year. Still works well.

And I'd recommend the black rubber sleeved bar over naked steel, for the latter can be rough and almost too strong.

The mag strip will mar the finish of polished knives. Ask me and my Kono Fuji how I know..

Damn. That sucks.

The magnets themselves are often covered by wood or other materials that would mitigate any blade damage but as others have noted, that is a very problematic location for knives.

I agree with Bob. The knives will get a thin coating of grees on them. Also reaching for a knife while you're cooking could be a problem.

PS we have the same backsplash. :)

I have wood magnetic strips in my kitchen (kind of like these - https://www.chefknivestogo.com/nowamarax.html) and they do not mar the finish on my knives. I would not put a knife above a stove, as it will get heated and cooled a lot and will probably have problems. Grease is also a problem, but you can wash that off.

I think a strip or two above prep area would be a much better idea - if you can't fit there, get a magnetic knife countertop board if that suits ya.

Very bad spot for a knife rack. I wouldn't do it.

From my cooking experience. Fumes and heat are not as bad but grease will definitely coat the knife and the rack. You will likely be diligent in clean the knives but less likely the rack.
