R-2 Megumis are in the air.

Post by ChefKnivesToGo »

AKA the "Jeff Knife". We're getting 240 and 210 gyutos from Kurosaki early next week with no handles. I'll put the section together and item pages today.

Yes. Hammered damascus cladding over R-2 steel.

You'll want this in a Yo handle.

It's definitely on the highly wanted list. Classic example of not pulling the trigger when they were in stock. Interestingly, I saw an AS version in the flesh in London recently. What put me off was that it was incredibly expensive when compared to CKTG even when you factor in shipping costs to the UK and import taxes. The other thing on this particular knife was that the blade had a very prominent curve almost step down from the handle which was more like cranked palette knife.

The Damascus is very subtle, almost as if not there. ;)

Yes it is not there. He obviously did them just with the hammered cladding over straight r-2

Yes, sorry, I was only at work for a little over an hour today so I just shot some pics and put a few things into the site but they're not ready yet. We'll start selling these Wednesday.

The Kurosaki R2 looks nice but has a more subtle look than I remembered on the one test drove, though it was a knife from a different vendor nearly 2 years ago to be fair. The grind appears to be much higher on this one too.
I hate to be negative but these Walnut/Maple handles are unimpressive, to me anyway . Ho wood w/ buffalo horn is just as nice. Kurosaki's standard Rosewood/Pakkwood handles are much nicer.

A few standout things to note with a quick compare to my Kurosaki AS...

The R2 spine is a full mm thinner than my AS. 2.65mm/3.65mm
The R2 is nearly 2oz lighter than my AS. 5.5oz/7.4oz
The R2 grind(blade road) is 5-6mm taller than on my AS.
The height at the heel and profiles are very similar with the R2 being slightly flatter.

The R2 is crazy thin behind the edge and feels as light as a laser. I'll give a full review soon after having a chance to put it through it's paces. I feel this will be a keeper in the end.
If God wanted me to be a vegetarian he wouldn't have made animals taste so good.
