Knife storage
Knife storage
Just wondering how y'all store your knives when they're not in use, either at home or at work. I have a 14" maple magnetic strip that I keep my stuff on at home, but people still swear by knife blocks even though they get gunky and gross after a year.
Re: Knife storage
I use a block at home. If your knives always go in clean the block stays clean.
At work we have a few magnetic strips that I use depending on what needs to be done any given day.

Mag rack for the house, roll for travel and Pelican case for long storage, knives out of rotation. Trying to get sayas built for all of them, but it will take another 5 years to complete.

I am not sure, had it for years. I will take a pic when I get home.
Re: Knife storage
I like the best of both worlds, a block but with open air magnetic racks ...... LOL!

Re: Knife storage
If those are the Arte Legno magnetic block available on Amazon, I had issues with the finish on those blocks. They aren't properly sealed and are prone to discoloration. You can't treat them with block oil or anything the way you can a traditional knife block/strip. Maybe beeswax. Anyway... a possible issue if you're sensitive to that kind of thing.

No problems yet, same brand but not from Amazon. Of course, I'm only about a year in, time will tell.btbyrd wrote: ↑Tue Oct 31, 2017 2:26 pm If those are the Arte Legno magnetic block available on Amazon, I had issues with the finish on those blocks. The longest board is like 294 mm, so, yes and no, depends if it is a true 300mm. I had one that fit, it was a short 300mm, LOL. The one I have now, the tip hits the bottom board before it rests on the handle, it will work but it scares me so I opt to keep it in a box.

Re: Knife storage
They're beautiful, but I had issues with F&F on the first one I ordered, and the second one got oil spots on it the very first night it was in the house. (And I wipe everything down at the end of the day.) Which is a shame, because I love those blocks. Here's a link to my too-long Amazon review (with photos and whatnot).
Re: Knife storage
Yeah, mine doesn't have the black inserts holding it together, it has a solid wood bottom. I wonder if Amazon might be a counterfeit? I bought mine at https://www.cuttingboard.combtbyrd wrote: ↑Tue Oct 31, 2017 3:10 pm They're beautiful, but I had issues with F&F on the first one I ordered, and the second one got oil spots on it the very first night it was in the house.
