Need to a get good combo water stone for travel

Post by kalbi tang »

I am finding that I don't want to bring up my full sharpening set up to my mountain condo to keep my knives up there sharp. Lugging up 4-6 stones to my condo is less than ideal. I would like to get a good combination grit water stone I can keep up there to keep my knives in decent shape. I'm thinking of a 1k/4000k or 1k/6k combo stone...and maybe a nano-strop with a diamond emulsion as a finisher. Thoughts...suggestions?

Hi there kalbi. I'm certainly no expert in this, but have been thinking of getting a combo "travelling stone". From what I've read on this forum over a few months, I'm leaning towards a Cerax 1k / 3k. I think that these two grits would cover off most things I would envisage while travelling, plus its box doubles as a stone holder. I wouldn't be wanting to tackle seriously munted knives while I was away, so it would be mainly just to keep my own knives in tip-top shape.

I'll be looking forward to any input from others to your OP. Thanks
Cheers Grant

Ken Schwartz may still sell the 150/1200 combo that is an ideal traveler...give him a call.
