New name for new pond
I'm going to offer an alternative to the little latex sharpening pond and I wanted a different name for them. I like them but I don't like the off white since it looks like crap with swarf on it and I also don't like the price. If I buy enough of them I can cut the retail in half. That said, I don't want to call them the same thing.
Any ideas?

Are you looking for a different name than a pond or something like Kohetsu Pond
Civil engineers use the term "Detention Basin" to describe a water-holding depression that is usually dry. Unlike a "Retention Pond" that usually retains water.
Maybe call it a Basin or a Gutter. Though gutter is not a pleasant word.
if it also holds a stone, then a Stone Holder+Basin or Stone Holder+Gutter.

The shapton I hope! The suheiro stone is bleh...Floppy mess that leeks mud/water everywhere if you do not keep it on a sheet pan or something when carrying it. In which case I would rather just use the sheet pan.
I would totally be for a knockoff shapton stone holder too...

Re: New name for new pond
I use an old lunch try with a suehiro stone holder on top and some rubber pads stuck to the bottom. I use a prep table at home so I have 100% me space to prep for dinner etc. Anyway, it is open shelving and I keep the whole setup, stone and all, directly under my cutting board. I can reach down and pull the whole unit out, sharpen on top of my cutting board and throw it back on the shelf under the table all in under 5 minutes. I can worry about cleaning up later! For me, having a station like this offers a lot of utility.
Now, I also have a sharpening station which is where I would like a true sharpening pond. This is where I do hobby sharpening. I think one like the Shapton would be great for this. But probably not needed. A cambro pan works fine...

I use a similar setup: an old poly board as a platform for the Suehiro pond on a shelf liner.
As you can see Mark has a point about "it looks like crap with swarf on it".

I should have been more specific. I don't get the Shapton pond.Kit Craft wrote: ↑Tue Jan 16, 2018 12:44 pmI use an old lunch try with a suehiro stone holder on top and some rubber pads stuck to the bottom. Now that I re-read Marks post I appears he meant the tiny one.

Re: New name for new pond
I think it probably ought to be called a stone pad or mat. I like basin, too, but it doesn't hold as much liquid as I would expect a basin to hold.
I was lukewarm on mine at first but now I almost always use it. At a reduced price it would be almost required equipment.

Yeah, tray might actually be misleading because it is not going to actually hold anything if you try to pick it up, lol.
