That gold thing on Moritaka knives
Re: That gold thing on Moritaka knives
I had always wondered what that was. Thanks for the explanations.

I've used but not owned a few Moritakas and have never seen or heard of an issue with the welded tang. I also have a few coworkers who own them and have heard nothing but praise about them.

They did it on purpose and think it makes for a better product. That's good enough for me. It's never bothered me, but is noticeable. Haven't they been making knives many hundreds of years longer than the good ol US of A has been a country? Figure they know what they are doing.

Re: That gold thing on Moritaka knives
Do you guys want me to ask them to nix it? I bet they would do it for me.
Re: That gold thing on Moritaka knives
Don't do it on my account Mark. Seems most people like it. It's just a solution to a problem that I don't have, and since I don't hear anybody complaining about their non-Moritakas rusting in half at the tang, I suspect it is not a problem for 99.9% others on this forum as well.
Re: That gold thing on Moritaka knives
Nooo, dont do it Mark. Thats my opinion. Let .oritaka be guys. Its a cool featureChefKnivesToGo wrote: ↑Mon Mar 19, 2018 12:41 pm Do you guys want me to ask them to nix it? I bet they would do it for me.

I have a 210 gyuto. It never occurred to me to mind the line in the steel. It may solve a non-existent problem or it may help. Don't mess with it.

Re: That gold thing on Moritaka knives
I think it’s hella goofy, I don’t see the need for them, but that braze will last forever. I was a machinist for years. I saw some hideous bubblegum brazing that had held things together for over 25 years, and I bet those brazes are still holding strong. One thing- if you’re the only one doing something like this, like Moritaka, and knife tangs aren’t falling apart within handles on the other 45 brands of knives sold here, you gotta wonder a bit....
Re: That gold thing on Moritaka knives
I have multiple times taken handles off and found the tang rusty. People who are sufficiently careful can avoid it, but it is an issue in many instances.

Way I see it the fine shokunin at that forge, been doing it for longer than most of us can even trace a family tree by like double? Let them do what they want. Honestly one reason I buy Moritaka is because of the humidity where I am. It seeps into everything. Stainless tang is a huge bonus.

It is part of what makes his knives special. And tangs do rust so I cannot see how this is such a bad thing.

Agreed. I like mine in every aspect.mauichef wrote: ↑Fri Mar 23, 2018 4:22 pm+1Cutuu wrote: ↑Mon Mar 19, 2018 5:27 pmNooo, dont do it Mark. Thats my opinion. Let .oritaka be guys. Re: That gold thing on Moritaka knives
I just rehandled a wantanabe, when I removed the old handle, there was some rust on the tang. No much, but enough to clean.mauichef wrote: ↑Fri Mar 23, 2018 4:22 pm+1Cutuu wrote: ↑Mon Mar 19, 2018 5:27 pmNooo, dont do it Mark. Thats my opinion. Let .oritaka be guys. Re: That gold thing on Moritaka knives
If the overall look was less rustic, maybe it would bother me a little, but now - not at all.
Re: That gold thing on Moritaka knives
I have a 210mm Kiritsuke that I love. Good grinds, nice hard AS steel, kurouchi has been pretty resistant and I like the feel of it. The different colored tang doesn't bother me one bit. No one can see once it is in hand, and I like having to not worry about corrosion. A long time ago I read an old interview with Takeda where he says they also use semi stainless for the tang and forge it to the blade. This was before his NAS line. I remember thinking that was a cool feature and was actually one of the reasons I bought the Moritaka.
Re: That gold thing on Moritaka knives
i like it. Good conversation piece. Not sure it makes a big difference, but it's unique. Like a Spidey hole.
Re: That gold thing on Moritaka knives
Maybe I’m late to the party, and the advert gladius posted has made the rounds before, but that has to be one of the most hilarious/classic bits of Japanese knife promotion I’ve seen.

Has anyone got a picture or two of a polished (migaki) Moritaka?
