I use Cherry wood as a strop. I cut a piece to the same dimensions as my Shapton Pro stones and keep my Cherry strop in one of the Shapton Pro boxes. To get a clean surface I use a hand plane on the Cherry wood that leaves clean and open surface that I load with CBN paste. I like Cherry over Balsa because it is more forgiving than the softer wood when I get to quick and tilt the edge slightly and dig in (I try not to do that often but it happens) I've been using my strop daily for two plus years now and it works really fine for me.
