Re: Show us your new handle
I finished my second handle today. I learned a lot on the first one and that helped. When I set the handle on this one I had the tang hole fitted perfectly and made the mistake of using 5 minute epoxy, I was warned not to do that. By the time I mixed the epoxy, added the dye and did some little things I had forgotten about, I started sitting the blade in the tang hole and I was having to force it too much, I got it to within a quarter inch of being done and I had to pull it out before it sat up on me. After digging epoxy out for a couple hours and cleaning the tang hole up again I don’t think I’ll use 5 minute expoxy for this application again. The knife is a Kippington with a fishhook grind. Handle is Quilted Tazmanian Blackwood, yellow micarta liner and a Gaboon ebony ferrule. My son is finishing one too, it’s been working with him.

I use 5 minute epoxy, you definitely have to have everything ready. I am pretty sure you watched my Instagram live where I did a couple handles. Let me know if you want me to share the video with you.
Prep is everything. Practice is also helpful.

Re: Show us your new handle
It might be the cooler temp in my shop but I fine 5 minute epoxy gives me 10 minutes to mix, get the epoxy in the tang hole, and then get the blade in. 15 minute epoxy would be more like 30 minute of working time.

Re: Show us your new handle
I’m in Arizona, maybe the dryness has something to do with it. I weighed out the mixture to the gram and things happened fast, the only thing I forgot to do was tape the blade, I had painters tape handy so I didn’t lose much time there. I used a syringe to pour the epoxy in and the hole wasn’t very big, that cost sometime, I drilled it out a bit the next time and it worked great. I buy them at the wood store, they stock them just for that. Btw, I like those metal spacers you did, they look sharp!

Re: Show us your new handle
I just purchased some blunted needles to get the epoxy deeper in the cavity comping out of the syringe. I expect that will help with one of the hardest parts. Thank you for the compliments on the metal spacer work. I enjoy solving new problems, and this has be changing everything I do. I started the second set today, maybe I will sell one or two of these. Good luck and let me know if I can help at all.nakneker wrote: ↑Mon Mar 18, 2019 9:51 am I’m in Arizona, maybe the dryness has something to do with it. Re: Show us your new handle
For the life of me I cannot get a good pic of this handle. You guys got me back in my shop again...(it's been about two or three years since I have made a octagon handle). I had some left over ebony, which I normally hate because it cracks when you look at it, but man, when it works it shines up like glass. I don't like the mammoth on this one, but the wood cracked at the end so I had to cut and add it. This one is going on a 210 Tojiro Yangi.

Agreed...but I don’t like seeing the lack of patina on the 210 & 240

I know you don’t, I try really hard to get no patina, I’ll clean the others soon too. I need to change my attitude huh.
