We have here a Hardware Gardening store called Bunnings and quite sure yous will have simmillar stores akin to this over there . Wife was having a stroll through the Gardening section and i selected a balsa strip for some new strops and then went for a walk through their gardening / Outdoor tile section and came home with 30cm x 30 cm and aprox 40cm thick sandstone tile which i thought was well purchasing for the use of a levelling/flattening stone ??.
Came home and gave it a burl and thought wow!!, the grit is just the right consistency for a levelling stone too especilally for coaser grit stones and gives a huge area to work the stone upon.
So for a mere $6.50 thought it a great Buy!!:).
Just a heads up for some who may not want to fork out more for a stone that does the same job...
Flattening Stones
Re: Flattening Stones
Tried it out on my King Stones and worked a treat sooooo , comè tomorrow I might just see if I can suss out a tile store with a tile saw cut one up for me into two/three hand sized stones.
This one way it is , is good in the fact you can hold your sharpening stone upside down and heaps of room to move all over the sandstone tile cover an even lap.
Worked a treat with the King Stones of old so cant see why it would be any diff with lapping/levelling the others as need be ??.
Have tried sandpaper in days gone by and just doesnt seem to be as comfy.

Will upload a pic of it when i can. Mind you have tried variouse sandpaper types and these dont go the course.
Do have Diomond plate for my finer stones.

Re: Flattening Stones
You can always use the sidewalk in a pinch. Cinder blocks are also cheap and big. The problem is they tend to eat up your stones.
Re: Flattening Stones
Yes you can and they certainly do as you say , and i have been sussing out variouse way for lapping my stones for some time from Diomond Plates etc to Sand paper both adhesive backed and normal and while they all can do the job i still have wanted something either not so aggressive or something that will do the job smoothly.
These sandstone tiles have been a first for me so far and like i said do not cost a lot and if they do dish which they may in future there is still more where they came from .
They are a smoother tile and one would have to have a feel of one to see what i mean..
Ive tried variouse lapping methods for my King Stones which again i have to stress have served me well for Twenty odd years and these tiles are the quickest .smoothest and more comfortable for me ..
Diomond plates have been not too bad but VERY Slow which may be good in one way ?? , but a pain in the butt otherwise and prefer the Diomond plates for the upper end sharpening stones wher eyou can level and sluury at the same time ..
Just my Two Bobs worth ey ..
