Handle | Honey/Curly Maple & ABW | Unknown Deba

Post by GopherBroke » Mon Mar 27, 2017 6:06 pm

I was contacted by Nick via email and asked to rehandle his deba.
The deba is a complete unknown, so if you recognize it please let me know.
This was the first time I've ever experienced a deba, and I now know for certain that I don't need one.

Ferrule: African Blackwood
Handle section: Honey Roasted Curly Maple
Spacers and rear cap: G10

Thanks, you did a great job!

I have been lurking this forum for some months now, I found it after a few purchases from the site and have been coveting one of Brian's handles ever since.

I have had this knife for years, it was a gift and has sentimental value so I thought a new handle would be nice. I have tried to do some loose translation and the top Kanji (in the small box) I think means 'registered'. The middle seems to mean 'white' and the bottom no clue. Thats about all I could get from google translate!

Great site, I am excited to be apart of it, will have lots of questions and little to offer. I am a home cook but worked in kitchens for about 10 years when I was younger now the extent of my professional knife work is filleting trout and salmon daily as part of my guiding business.

That's a good looking handle. And I dig the deba too.

Very nice, Brian. I might want something similar on my Gassan, but with a darker main wood.

Are you aware of any natural woods that have similar pattterns to the honey/curly maple but are darker?

Nice but still prefer the RTFS handle best.

Maybe some ringed gidgee ? Check the timberjoint.com (an awesome Timos' suggestion)

Jeffry,
This piece was Honey Roasted, but they do make a Dark Roast that is 2-3 times darker. it should be a perfect solution/fit.

Glad to hear you still like it!
Like you (and others), it has become my favorite, and is the only shape my knives get ;)

Hah. I was the one to start the RTFS trend. Or at least lend a helping hand.

I am thinking an ink black wood for the handle, a lighter black with movement for the ferrule, and a lighter-colored spacer. Perhaps African blackwood for the handle, Bolivian rosewood for a spacer and/or cap and Striped black ebony from Gabon for the ferrule.

I'll email in the near future to sort out.

It's taking me to somewhere that doesn't sell wood; an Australian web design site.

Yep, you were.
I had the idea (loosely based on the new Goko handles), and you were the kick in the ass that got me to make the first one.

Indian Ebony is the darkest/blackest/void of all grain species I've seen in a long time.
Maybe Macassar Ebony for the ferrule.
I do have an OK piece of Bolivian Rosewood; similar to the piece I used to do the three western Goko's for Mark several months ago: http://www.chefknivestogo.com/hi21gybyadma.html
You figure out the lumber, and just let me know when to start making saw dust. ;)
