Walnut Coffee Table

Post by GopherBroke » Sun Apr 02, 2017 6:47 pm

I was at my favorite (Amish) lumberyard for hardwoods, and I stumbled across a piece of 2" Walnut that was about perfect for a coffee table, and the price was right, so I snagged it.
Well, when I got home with it I planned to build it for myself, and after building it and seeing it... I knew it was destined for someone else's living room. I wrapped it up and stored it away for the right time. Well the right time was a week ago when my Uncle called and wanted a "nice wooden coffee table", and asked if I could take him down to Mr. Bylers' to look at possible pieces. Long story short Unk came and looked at it (still no finished or together mind you), and bought it.

The top is natural edge, although there is no remaining bark there is still lots of character.. like a lightning strike/char mark. Rings/lines from some sort of chicken wire fencing, and the more unique pattern I've ever seen on a board.

All wood is Black Walnut.
Top & legs 2" thick
Length 51"
Height: 17.5"
Width of top is from 15-3/4" to 18-1/4"

The grain pattern at the bottom of this picture... what's it called, quilted?

Notice the dark squares at the bottom right?
Guessing it was some sort of fencing.

The shelf is simply the most beautiful single board I've ever laid my eyes on.
It is Ingrown Bark Walnut, but has many different characteristics in it.

With as unique as the as the wood was in this project.. I hated to see it leave, but it's in the family so maybe some day it'll come full circle.

Thanks for lookin' ;)

Wow. Stunning. Nice job getting out of the way and letting those beautiful pieces of wood speak for themselves.

Thanks guys, but I only put some glue, and 19 screws to it. Mother Nature did all the work. The piece for the shelf was insanely figured. After the last coat of poly was on it I placed it under a 250w fluorescent plant light and walked around it; the chatuyounce was stunning.

Really nice table. I bet that was hard to let go once you saw it completed.

Although I am serious that I want one and that I need one, somehow I'm willing to bet something this nice is out of my price range :-/

Hell I would've kept the shelf to make a side table, that walnut shelf is gorgeous
