Atoma Lapping Plate Advise

Post by Horizonson »

Am contemplating the purchase of an Atoma 140, and slapping a 400 or 600 onto the other side.

Stones I will be using:

Bamboo 150

Cerax 320

Chosera 800 (built-in stand)

2k GBofJ

Rika 5k

Kitayama 8k

What say ye? 😊

I would go with the Atoma 140/400 combination. I have the 140 and it works very well on an assortment of stones like yours, I should get the 400 to use on my finer grit stones.

The 140 is really all you need. Even the Kit 8k won't act any different if you flatten it with a 140 or a 1200. It will only take you longer to get it flat. If you are lapping natural stones, a finer grit plate will come in handy. For synthetics, I've found it doesn't matter.

I agree and the only reason I mentioned the 400 was because I don't like taking too much material off my Shapton Glass Stones. But, If I only had one plate it would be the Atoma 140 (and I have two of them).

If you use the grid system while flattening, it’ll remove the same amount of material regardless of how coarse your flattening plate is.

So the 140 won't "overly texture" the finer grit stones?

Would lightly scraping them with a sacrificial knife, or barestock, be beneficial, post flattening?

Use a pencil to draw a "grid" on the stone surface and flatten until all the marks are gone.

Would it be advantageous to give the finer stones a lick or two of the 400 or 600, after flattening with the 140?

Say, for 2k and finer?

I do that. I use a 140 followed by a 600 atoma. Just seems like the right thing to do.

Me too but use a 400 for medium grits stones and 600 or 1000 for fine grits. Also I almost remove the grid lines with the 140 and completely remove it with the finer plate.

Well now I need to buy more atomas, you would know and I like the idea anyways.

Marks sells a 400/1000 combo plate that works well. The 140 does the bulk of the work.

I’m not seeing the combo plate. Could I trouble you for a link? I’d like to move forward on that.

Thanks.

Now THAT sounds like a good idea!

Soooo; after initial flattening with Atoma 140...

Touch up the 800 and 2k with the 400 side; and the 5k and 8k with the 1k side?
