Hakata saya

Post by Drewski »

This seemed like a "knife care" issue, so I'm posting it here. Just purchased an Ice hakata and wondering what a saya would look like for a knife of such a shape. Seems like a saya wouldn't be a traditional style, but that there could be interesting alternatives. Does anyone have a saya for a hakata blade, or know of a good design for one?

I was thinking of having Cody Paul do one for mine. I asked him about it and this was his response..
They are funky for sure. I've done one other without any troubles. I think they need just a little more deliberate guidance when inserting, kinda like a cleaver
I'm still planning to send mine to him (he does excellent work). I'm not sure how it will look though, I assume it will probably just look large compared the knife.

Ya, I was thinking about designs that would keep the saya shaped the same as the blade. In my nonexperienced mind, the spine would have to be open to the tallest part of the hakata blade. This would require a strap? second pin? along spine above the heel. Maybe nothing would be required along the spine if the saya was a snug fit.

I was thinking about a design that is two parts and held together by magnets.

How about a hakata-shaped saya that is simply open along the spine, much like the felt knife-guards? Only, with a pointy end where the hakata would fit more securely.
my 2cents, barely

That's kinda what I was imagining initially as well. More "inside the box" than the magnets, but also might be easier to make as well.

Same as you, I bought the yahiko ice from Ray when the first batch were out of stock. Loving it.
Open spine with a strap on top and pin underneath should work.

Well, if you want to keep me posted if you decide to do anything regarding a saya for the Ice, lemme know and we could double up potentially. Cheers! 🥂
