Anyone using a Loupe?

Post by JayBee »

Just curious if anyone here is using a magnifying glass or a jewler's loupe to inspect their edges? I never really see the topic discussed in any of the sharpening guides or ive read and watched, so i'm not sure if it's a common practice. I'm quite new to sharpening, and i'm hoping that being able to closely examine the edge might help me identify inconsistancies in my technique. Thoughts?

I bust mine out comparing one stone or strop to another or if I run into a problematic session to check for the edge of the edge or micro burr, aside from that I don’t bust it out for “regular” sessions. Useful to have one in my book, but not exactly a necessity. Equal light reflection from a bright led flashlight (something I’m more likely to pull out for regular sessions) is more useful for me finding inconsistencies than a loupe.

I use mine on a regular basis as well, to check for a number of different characteristics of an edge. It's a very good reference tool for me.

Highly recommend one to use regularly. Belamo makes a nice one and there are several available here on CKTG> Welcome!

A loupe is very helpful when learning to sharpen. Helps you to identify residual burrs and wire edges as well as other problem areas. I don't use it with every edge now but I still like to have it on hand just to check my work sometimes.

I tried for a while, but didn't really get any benefits from it. But I'm not an amazing knife sharpener to begin with. If it can shave armhair going with the grain, I'm happy.

Hey I've been curious about that model, how long have you had it and has it deepened your knowledge of sharpening in ways not possible without?

I've had it several years and yes it has provided a method to visually inspect the edge and scratch patterns I cannot see otherwise esp. as my eyes age. Can one do without it - yes...does it help? - yes, esp. if you are serious about sharpening. It is relatively inexpensive with decent quality image and better magnification than loupe.

For me,a cheap loupe has been a great help in learning. The most important thing is shows me is when I’m not reaching the very edge.

I'll try to get these for the store. They look like they'll fit in well with our other magnifiers.

I use mine a fair bit. It's the only way I can really see the finer details of my endeavors.
I also have a digital microscope for when I want to be super anal.

I'm going to pick up the MicroBrite Plus. Maybe a couple other ones from them too. Magnifiers are really nice to have around. I used one today for examining teeny tip issue and it made it easy to see and fix.
