Splash and go above Spydeco Ultra Fine?
Re: Splash and go above Spydeco Ultra Fine?
I think you will certainly get some takers on that offer.
I suspect a stone offered as the Naniwa SS-5000 is a Super Stone. They're a different line, which may not be bad here. They're also splash and go. Most 5000 grit stones including a Naniwa would take the place of your Spyderco ceramic. It is the third stone in a traditional coarse/medium/fine three stone progression.

The Naniwa SS-5000 is the Naniwa Super Stone and is WAY overpriced at $85.

I’m far from an expert, but the Naniwa site says that it’s the Chosera... are these that good?
Halfway down on the second page.... sorry, I couldn’t figure out how to post a pic....

Re: Splash and go above Spydeco Ultra Fine?
That Naniwa catalog shows the Chosera as an SS-5000 but finding one for $85 is unlikely and probably a Super Stone. Chosera stones are very good but if your Spyderco produces a semi-mirror polish, a finishing stone (bottom of page 3 of that catalog) is preferred.

Re: Splash and go above Spydeco Ultra Fine?
I feel that is an old copy of their catalog because the original Chocera isn't available anymore, it's now called the Naniwa Pro. Any Choceras left out there are probably old stock but they could still be offered for the Japanese market.
I did find that Item # listed on several sites and it does appear that it is the older Chocera on the plastic base. It is a good stone and if you can get it for $85 jump on it, those stones used to go for $150+. If you get it and are still not sure what it is take a picture of the stone/box and we can tell you exactly what it is.

Re: Splash and go above Spydeco Ultra Fine?
Thanks for the help! I ended up ordering the Chocera 5000; I think Jeff B is right, it’s old stock from a reputable online Woodworking site that allows returns. I might end up selling the spyderco, which I can’t say that I love. All in its $95.59 to my door.
Now I’m on the prowl for the next stone down. I’m very interested in Japanese knives and sharpening (only people around here can likely understand). I can’t say I love the feel/experience / harshness of the dmt’s, or the spyderco (which I now might sell) for that matter.
So, what lower grit stones match well with the Chosera 5000...? Is the Green Brick of Joy (I realize that not splashless) too close in grit? 400/1000 superstone? Other recommendations/ favorites?
I’ll try to post pics (if I can figure it out when it comes). It turns out they have business in my home state of IL, so I had to pay taxes (I hate paying taxes to the socialist republic of IL).
Thanks for the feedback and advice.

I'm not the biggest fan of the Super Stones, not as fast a stone as I like and a little to soft for my tastes. They do polish above their grit rating. Razor guys love them, you may too.
If you can find deals on other Choceras like you did on that 5k I'd try to acquire the 400 and 1k.

Re: Splash and go above Spydeco Ultra Fine?
I have seen some mixups between the Choceras and superstones in various listings, so this can get confusing. The Chocera 5k is a gray stone if that helps, which may or may not be attached to a base and may or may not have an accompanying 600 grit small cleaning stone. Pics would help The 5k Chocera is either 25 or 20 mm thick.
"I'm not the biggest fan of the Super Stones, not as fast a stone as I like and a little to soft for my tastes." Agree. I like the 10k and 12k Superstones, but not a big fan of other lower grit superstones either.

Re: Splash and go above Spydeco Ultra Fine?
Well, the 5000 grit stone showed stone showed up; any chance one of you more experienced sharpeners can tell me if it’s really a Chosera (I assume it is, I bought it from a reputable site). Thanks for the help!
I also received my first Japanese knife today, I went with the Kohetsu SLD Gyuto 210mm. I don’t have much to compare it to, but I like it! I wish I would have had cktg sharpen it, so I know how sharp it can get. My skills are a work in progress.

Definitely a Chosera. Good stone and a good knife so I'd say you're off to a good start!

Thanks for the verification Jeff!
I bought a 1000 grit chosera to go with it.... first time with a whetstone... makes me want more.... Eventually I’d like to get a coarse stone to complete the set!

Re: Splash and go above Spydeco Ultra Fine?
The Chocera 400 is an excellent low grit stone that will work nicely with your 1 and 5k. I'd think about getting the 3k also sometime down the road. Not all knives need to go up to 5k and the 3k is a nice finisher too. There seems to be one stone that really stands out in most lines and with the Choceras it's the 3k.

Re: Splash and go above Spydeco Ultra Fine?
Just got some more of these full sized Choceras in a couple of days ago. They are NOT obsolete and are currently available. No strong opinions between the newer skinny ones and these, but just wanted to correct earlier misinformation in this thread. to correct an earlier post.
Also note that these are 25 mm thick except for the 10k which is 30 mm thick. The 10k has no base with it and comes in its own more ornate box with a towel around the stone. The towel is tumeric colored. I do have the 600 cleaning stones too.

Nobody said they were "obsolete". But fewer retailers are offering the older version all the time.
