Stone is a tiny bit short. How to fix it?

Post by ChefKnivesToGo »

Hello,

I received and am using the 1000 grit Shapton stone I received from Chefknivestogo (order below). I have one issue with the stone that I hope you can resolve. This 1000 grit stone was a purchase to round out my set of Shapton 4000 grit, 8000 grit, and Sharpening Field Holder. The 4000 and 8000 grit stones fit very snugly into the Field Holder. The 1000 grit stone I received from you is just a little bit shorter that the other two, and although it doesn’t fall out, it does wiggle a little in the holder. Is this a problem that can be solved?

Hi Eric,

That's a new one and I like solving these little problems creatively.

If it doesn't fall out we're taking very small variation I would suspect. How about applying a thin layer of calk to one end of the stone? If it doesn't work it's easy enough to scrape off so you won't ruin it or anything.

Let me see if my forum can come up with something better. :)

More permanent solution would be some epoxy. Would have to build a small form with masking tape on one end. ( that would work since it appears we are talking just a mm or two). Over pour the length slightly, then sand it down to make it fit like you like it. Granted this depends on your skillset/the trouble you want to go to. That or some rubber bands of the correct width would work as a temp fix if you don't want to permanently alter the stone.

Get a stone holder and adjust accordingly.

I purchased the Shapton Sharpening Stone Holder and while I love it's heft and stability I found that I kept acquiring various stones their sizes vary quite a bit, so I bought an adjustable holder like this one;

Humm,maybe just lay a wet micro fiber towel in your stone holder and lay the stone on top of that,adjust for snug fit.Problem solved and cheap remedy.

I've had good luck with the non skid shelf liners on a 2x4. My sink bridge is a totally over built unit involving stainless steel strut.

Use a toothpick to wedge it in if the gap is small.

I would try gluing a thin piece of foam, cork, or rubber to the stone holder for a fix. Hard to beat the adjustable stone holders.

I use rubber tape for roofing cut to size for this type of issue. It is super non skid and is maybe 2mm thick. I actually use it on my stone holder to fix an unevenness in it to give the stone better support.
