Knife Stands
WORK IN PROGRESS
A friend asked me to make him a knife stand after lending me a bunch of knives and stones and doing some major reprofileing and his grinder/stones. I had some fun playing with wood scraps; check out the double knife stand. Sometimes an oops becomes more valuable.
What do you think? What woods should I use for the Etsy store?

Re: Knife Stands
Yes. They are pretty simple. Last night I sanded and oiled then, tonight I will post final photos.

Re: Knife Stands
The purpleheart ones have some worm holes in them, I may let them go cheap...
I have plenty of wood in the shop if anyone wants one. I have several projects coming in and a big ongoing one, but I bet I can slide this in.

Re: Knife Stands
I am confused as to why you would store a knife on its edge. Or is it held off the edge by a tight fit in the slot?

Re: Knife Stands
I see your point. My logic has always been that the effect of storing the knife like this, sitting on its own edge under its own weight, would have no issues. There is less force on a knife in a holder like this than in use on a cutting board.

Re: Knife Stands
As soon as I posted my reply i thought..."well it is not as hard on the edge as simple usage even on a very kind board" so I totally see your point Ben.
I have a cradle for a Sukenari Honyaki Yanagiba that Carter made for me but it holds the knife in its saya.
I really like the idea of a horizontal table top storage solution.
Well done mate!
I might be in touch for a couple

Re: Knife Stands
There are two bunkas in the photo, both are home brew hacks of knives I did not like and were redundant. I am going through a thin tip phase. Next up I smell a cleaver phase, it will be a thin tipped cleaver.

Re: Knife Stands
It was the one on the right that intrigued me. Very different.
Thin tipped cleaver.....looking forward to seeing that.

A better pic of the bunka can be seen here. Details coming soon...mauichef wrote: ↑Tue Jan 23, 2018 8:00 pmIt was the one on the right that intrigued me. Very different.

Re: Knife Stands
Ray, that knife is a collaboration between Tomita-San, Ben, and myself.
It started off as a poor performing nakiri that Ben turned into a bunka. He then sent it to me and told me to have fun.
I'd like to think I turned it into a real performer. I KNOW I vastly improved it. A lot of grinder time and even more time on stones.
Ben has a before and after choil shot laying around. Perhaps he'll post it.
I lovingly refer to it as the Nakunka.

Re: Knife Stands
Thanks for the back story Chris.
Guys that is totally cool!
I love the story and the blade!
I cannot believe they are the same knife

Re: Knife Stands
Chris sprinkled some magic dust on it and boom. Now if I can stop playing with his KS, koshi, and Jnat stones he lent me I will give that thing a workout.
Just think of the hours of woodwork I have to do to pay him back.
