Bensbites custom handle/Masakage Koishi

Post by slobound »

I finally got around to taking some pictures of this handle that I asked Ben to make for me. I’ll take this opportunity to gush on the quality of the craftsmanship and great communication throughout the process. If you’re interested in a custom handle, I would absolutely recommend starting a conversation with Ben.

I chose a chechen burl hybrid with black micarta spacers for my Masakage Koishi 240.

Very nice Ben!

This from a guy who makes his own...I am lucky enough to have found some people who send me nice blocks of wood and trusting me.

Yeah, the hybrid blanks are really cool! I had to grab a couple of them when I saw them available.

Hello just a couple of questions... Just bought a koishi 240mm and am thinking about a rehandle... I love the knife but it feels very unbalanced in the hand does the new handle weigh more?if so do you think that the counter weight help knife performance?

Everyone has different preferences on balance points. I prefer knives that have a forward balance point, many of my customers prefer a balance point right at the ferrule. Switching the handle from natural wood to a stabilized wood like this will move that balance point back and require less upkeep. Stabilized wood is made by filling the voids in wood with a monomer that is then polymerized.

To answer your questions:

1) the new handle weighs more.
2) the relationship between balance point and performance is tied to personal preference.

Thanks! It's definitely an amazing hybrid block and Ben did a great job of transforming it to this killer handle.
