Heavy Cutting Stone for Edge Pro

Post by scribble »

I am looking for a heavy cutting, decent wearing stone for my Edge Pro. I have been using the original 120 grit but have went through way too many as it seems like for every micron of blade i remove the same amount of the stone goes away. I use the 120 a good deal due to people thinking there pocket knife is a light saber or something.

What do you use or recommend?

Hi Scribble and welcome to the forum. I persevered WAY too long with the standard EP stones. The EP1000 & EP1200 stones are actually pretty good, but the lower grit stones have been well overtaken by the good third party stones that are now available.

I use the Nubabtama 150, Shapton Glass 220, 500, 1k, 2k for my coarse & medium stones. As Gladius says the Atoma 140 diamond stone gets about its business. It probably cuts faster than the Nub150, but does leave pretty deep scratches & so needs to be followed up with a coarse stone of about the same grit rating, before moving on to a progression of stones.

I would replace the EP120 & others progressively as funds allow

I have used the CKTG 140 Diamond plate for EP with great results, I personally don't see the need to shell out the extra $$ for the Atoma in the EP size, full size absolutely.

We have the Atoma plates here: http://www.chefknivestogo.com/atoma1403.html

But I agree with Tom that they're comparable to the CKTG 140 which are 1/3 the price so you should give one a try and see if you like it: http://www.chefknivestogo.com/ck140grdiplf.html

We also do a small set of 4 low grit stones and plates for $35.00 which is one of our best selling items for the Edge Pro. http://www.chefknivestogo.com/edprolowgrpl.html

My shapton glass 220 cuts very quickly and I highly recommend them. They wear rapidly so you need a way to flatten them.

I have the Atoma 140 available in 1" , 1/2", and 2" widths for the EdgePro as well as full sized Atomas. (Also 400 600 and 1200) In addition, for the EdgePro as well as fullsized I have the Nubatama Bamboo 150, 120, 60 and 24 grit stones.

I am just releasing diamond plates full sized and now for the EdgePro in 46 and 60 grit, so if you really want fast metal removal, both for full sized and EP, just get hold of me :)
