Which Atoma Diamond Plate to use for lapping?

Post by ChefKnivesToGo »

Hello,
I am currently using Shapton glass stones for sharpening knives. Highest grit is 16k (doesn’t get a lot of use) and was wondering what would be the best (fastest) lapping plate for these stones. Currently have a silicon carbide lapping plate but am looking to upgrade to a better setup. Was thinking the Atoma 400.
Thanks
J.

Hi J,

The Atoma 140 Grit is the best choice if you want a fast plate to lap your stones. The 400 is slower and wears out more quickly.

The Atoma 140 works fine on higher grit finishing stones too, just use less/light pressure when flattening those.

+1 for the Atoma 140. I have found that if I used the 400 grit Atoma on stones somewhere above 1000 grit that it's possible to make them too smooth and they don't sharpen/hone as well.
