Next knife-of-the-month passaround?
Next knife-of-the-month passaround?
The Yoshimi passaround is heading toward the second half and I am looking for something else to host.
One knife I am interested in is the Takayuki AS Kengata that nkmiller gives high marks. Love to hear other ideas.

No ideas?
Other brands that haven't received much attention on CKTG include:
Yoshimitsu AS
Yoshimitsu B#2
Hinoura
Kuwabara
Sukenaria AS hairline (OOS)
Tsubaki hakata
Older brands that might be due for reappraisal:
Goko
Kotetsu Hap40
New stuff coming in: Toyama (but a lot of people have tried), Okada and Katsuyasu?

I'd be interested in any of those in 240 length. I've been keen to try a Yoshimitsu AS.
Re: Next knife-of-the-month passaround?
By the way, the Yoshimi arrived to me today in good order. It is in the best condition I've ever seen on a passaround.
Re: Next knife-of-the-month passaround?
I've been eyeing that Yoshi AS too. Could be next.
It helps that the Yoshimi went on passaround new. And since people have skin in the game, and know others do too ... maybe that has been salutary.

I would be interested for the Yoshimitsu b#2 240mm.
Interested to see how it stacks up vs. the Shibata AS (almost same weight, but different profile and steel)

Re: Next knife-of-the-month passaround?
A Kuwabara would be my first choice. There aren't many single maker knives out there and that no one here seems to have tried one under $200 is a little weird. Considering the cost of the knife and the choil shot we can all see it could be an absolute dud, but it is a particularly unique knife that could also be an incredible diamond in the rough. I have bought two and tried one Munetoshi. They cost about as much as the Kuwabara, are made in the same sort of generally rough style, don't look much better than the Kuwabara at the choil, and cut like Watanabes.
If the Kuwabara isn't selected by March I'll host that one myself. Worst case scenario four of us get to try a unique knife and I get to regrind it at the end. Best case scenario we give Mr. Kuwabara a run on his stock.
I'm somewhat interested in a Hinoura. It's on my and many other lists to eventually buy and a lot of us have one or have used them, so I don't think it would do much for the community, but I would try to take part. I would like the other lesser known smiths, too. I think we should skip the Toyama, they're already well known and available. Anyone considering buying one really should just buy one.

After looking at every maker on CKTG, Rob, I was drawn to Kuwabara for the same reasons. But check out the choil shots of the bunka and nakiri and compare to the 210 gyuto.Lepus wrote: ↑Thu Feb 15, 2018 1:37 am Considering the cost of the knife and the choil shot we can all see it could be an absolute dud, but it is a particularly unique knife that could also be an incredible diamond in the rough. Weird curvature on the left side of those. The centerline of the knife looks straight, they're ground or hammered that way...

Maybe the new B2 Yahiko Jeffry?
I'm Dave. I don't take myself too seriously and you probably shouldn't either.

Maybe, Dave. I have owned the 210 and 240 from the same smith, the Yahiko Shimo. Both of these knives are B#2 and they seem to share some similarities. Want to hear what JD has to say.
I loved the Yahiko Shimo 210. Great tip. The 240 reminded me of the Sekiso, but it was not quite as good.
