Tanaka VG-10 Damascus 240mm Gyuto Re-handle

Post by nevrknow »

New to me product. Thought I would try it out. works a lot like wood just mind your heat buildup. ;)

Acrylaster with G-10 spacer and stabilized Sindora Burl Ferrule.

Balance point is exactly at the heel.

So how does a material like that compare to wood in price?

About the same. Depending on where you get it of course. Learning curve involved of course. Hence my heat build up statement. 😀

That’s exactly what that knife needs. Good job. Tell us more about the knife. I’ve not heard anyone say heyve used that in the 240 length

You are correct Igalor, the VG-10 Damascus doesn't have kanji on the left side of the blade.

Good catch!

I'm doing 3 at the moment. 2 blue 2's, 1 dammy, 1 nashiji and vg10 dammy.

Must have had that vg10 on my mind 😁

Thanks!

Hah, don't make one if you have no use for it. I just don't see too many makers do custom D handles.

From the makers I've talked to, D handles are harder and more time consuming to make which drives up the price. More people prefer octagonal too but that trend seems to be changing though.

I have played with some different shapes, and there is more to come. That being said people I talk to have a strong preference for tapered octagonals.

I know there are a few forums where people show off their new "shoes" and yeah, octagonal outnumber everything else probably 20:1 but there are a few makers who on rare occasion do some wicked custom D handles. Or at least some sort of hybrid D.
