Small/Medium Knife Case to stick inside another bag

Post by dmonterisi »

Hi all-

I am looking for a compact knife roll/case that I can either stick inside of a backpack or a motorcycle tail bag. I am looking at the JAW small leather roll on CKTG, but wondered if anyone had other suggestions? I only need to carry up to 3 knives typically: a 150mm honesuki or petty; a 165mm nakiri and up to a 240mm gyuto. trying to be as minimalist as possible while still providing some protection. Thank you for any suggestions.

Weftandwarp makes some nice looking things and it's a small business owned by one lady.

Other people really like the things that darkhardt does. I know less about them. But their products are pretty universally liked elsewhere on the internet.

Had a chef that road a cruiser everywhere. He legit used a wrench roll from a hardware store and stowed that in his saddle bags. Legit af.

So, I've been thinking about making my own knife bag, and that reminded me that I made my own percussion equipment bag in high school for my mallet sticks, and this made me realize that I should probably look at percussion bags, not least because they come in a huge variety of sizes (also called "drum stick bags" or "mallet stick bags"). For your purposes, this could be simply IDEAL. Most such bags are heavy-duty black canvas, not too expensive, and would hold three knives very securely—more securely than most "knife" bags, which is probably handy on a motorcycle.

Just a thought. Taking 20 seconds to search, this one is super ugly but probably exactly the type of practical size/design you need:

The other advantage of this route is that, if you have a local large music store in your area, you can probably bring your knives and try out 5-10 bags on the spot, which is nearly impossible to do with knife cases in this size range anywhere.

Don't spend tons of money. It can be done cheap. Just get a padded case: https://www.knifemaking.com/product-p/r16n.htm

Easily fits three knives, make some cardboard sheaths toss it in your back pack and call it good.

This is what I primarily use. I can get up to 5 knives in one. I also use this from JKI:

Love this bag, ended up buying a second one. I have a leather knife roll I bought for $90 ages ago before they became a popular (and EXPENSIVE) option. But not a fan of the roll type bag. As cool as they are, I just don't like taking up the space needed to unroll a knife bag. That said, I also have a metal case that is slim and rectangular that works very well, but may be too bulky for what you're looking for.

I say stick with the padded knife case. They're cheap AF, so you can buy several and have different knife kits ready to roll.

Not sure if it's any good but Mercer makes a backpack with a knife insert.
Search "Mercer Culinary KnifePack Plus" on Amazon

It looks like they sell just the knife case insert as well..
Search "Mercer Culinary Hard Knife Case" on Amazon

What's your preferred method of carrying things on your bike..? Is your tail bag big enough to hold your knives? Have you looked at saddle bags or tank bags?
