Tracking says it should be delivered by the time I get back home, along with that beautiful differentially hardened 240 you made! They look superb Carter. I guess that’s what you do, make the good stuff. Thanks again!

This is the knife I made for Isboogy. The story behind this is that he purchased one of my 52100 gyutos second hand and really liked it, he asked me to make a new knife with some different dimensions and with a differentially hardened blade....he wanted the handle to be the same as the original knife....here it is:

Image

I still had some of the exact same zircote for the handle, so we used it on the new knife and I sourced a matching piece for the saya. The new knife is made of 26C3 hardened to 64/65Rc. This knife is very thin and despite dimensions of 259mm x 49mm, it only weighs 5.85oz. Here are the pics:

Wondering if either Isboogy or Carter can explain the steel choice, 26C3. I haven't heard much about it but I don't know much about steel types. Beautiful knife, and interesting to hear about the custom process. Cheers!

Here is an article on 26C3 from Larrin Thomas, he is Devin's son. Devin refers to 26C3 as "spicy white". It is a carbon steel that is capable of a fine molecular structure, high hardness, and will reveal a hamon when differentially hardened. For me, as a maker, I can take it 2-3 more points of hardness than W2.

I made dinner tonight with the beast - been really busy dealing with mom for the most part lately, but we had a great evening - dinner and girls hockey tournament. ICarter has made me the most comfortable and best performing knife I own. Can't thank him enough for the thing. Going to do one with him for Jen this year - she is now rocking a Hitomoto, but helped tonight and really likes my knife except "it's just a little to big" for her - every time I use it I get a grin - will never pull it out of the house, but it's just such a fir for me. Thanks again Carter!

This is a 215mm gyuto made of 52100 carbon steel (63 HRC), the height is 45mm. The handle is maple burl with copper and buffalo horn. The saya is marble wood with a copper pin that is knurled and has a marble wood inset.

This knife is available, please PM me if you are interested.

Thanks for looking!

Ah, I don't see anything below? Did you mean above?
