ats-34 vs. aus-8

Post by Ttoldi »

Can anyone tell me the difference between ats-34 and aus-8 steel. I know ats-34 is stainless. Is aus-8 stainless. I tried searching the internet but all the information seems to be in German and I don't comprende. I saw a scale comparing them and a lot of the numbers look the same but again it was in German and I counld not tell what elements they were comparing.

From what I was able to glean, ATS-34 will probably beva bit more wear resistant, AUS-8 a bit more corrosion resistant.

AUS8 is a mid performance stainless similar to 440B while ATS34 is a copy of 154CM and considered higher performance
Here is a comparison of the composition differences:

What are you trying to measure - I use an AUS8 knife as a line knife (great for the purpose) - would not use it doing boxes of hard veg prep.
Steels are all different, got to know what the purpose of the blade is. I own HAP40 down to AUS6 knives - each steel has a purpose. I love buck 440c knives for field dressing big game - you need to supply us with the intended purpose - for doing boxes of onions a good blue steel knife is great, there is no "magic" blade masterial - just what performs best on a particular product.
