Red Brick Review

This is a great stone with great feedback, cuts well, and the red mud is really cool. There is one thing to be aware of if you decide to buy it though. It holds moisture for a VERY long time. The first time I used it, I soaked, sharpened, rinsed, then let dry for a few hours and put it back in the box and put it away in a drawer. The next time I opened the drawer a few days later the box was moldy as was the stone inside. Cleaned it up, lapped it to remove the mold stains, sharpened, and let it dry out on the counter overnight, then put away without the box. Next time I opened the drawer, the stone was moldy again. This time I lapped it, soaked it for an hour or so in a 10% bleach solution and let it dry in the sun. Then let it dry overnight and it was still damp in the morning. Overall, it took a few days to fully dry before I was comfortable putting it away. I also have a green brick (among others) which is the same size but fully dries in just a couple of hours. It's not humid where I live and I haven't had this problem with other stones and I've been sharpening for around ten years. Don't let this sway you from getting it because it is a fantastic stone, especially for the price, but let it dry fully before putting it away and be aware that it takes a long time to fully dry.
