Current SPAM Countermeasures

Post by SteveG »

We've had quite a few Eastern European spammers (a.k.a - A-Holes) hit the new site in the past few days and the banning workload is taking us away from normal forum activities.

To counteract this activity, the following restrictions are now in place:
  • When you register as a new user your posts will require approval from Admins or Moderators before they will appear on the forum.
  • Once we determine that you are a legitimate forum user & contributor, we'll remove this restriction.
Thanks in advance for your patience and cooperation while we work to make these forums much less spammer friendly.

Agreed. We have a similar procedure on a BBQ forum I help moderate.

Thank you to the admins, moderators, and various knowledgeable users here.

The approval thing has pretty much snuffed out the spammers. This was a great idea Steve. We're getting almost none now.

I'm catching a few Russians, but not that much so this seems to be working well. And they aren't even selling knives lol.

Let's put it down to 1 post from 2. It will cut down on the time for legit members to get approved and see their posts and pm people etc.

I'm a moderator for a BBQ forum. We have a 1 post approval setup. That's all that is needed. You'll know with that first post if it's a spammer or legitimate new member.

I've just made my first post here, asking for a knife recommendation and I'm a forum admin elsewhere. If you want some anti-spam tips (depending on how much you get on this forum), I could offer a few suggestions. The main one would be to check out Stop Forum Spam, which offers a (no cost, but you can donate) way to screen attempted new user registrations. This forum uses different software compared to the one I manage, so you would just need to see if there is a plugin of some sort to automate the checks here.
