I need some education. Looking at Jeff b photos of his life patina it looks almost orange in color. I thought that meant it is a sign of beginning rust.
I have been removing this from my stainless clad knifes.
Not sure any more what is ok patina and what is rust.

A general rule of thumb is to wipe a dry blade on a clean paper towel. If the towel is still white, there is no rust, if it transmits any color, its rust and should be removed.

Agree with this. My experience with patina is that it will shift in color depending on how the light falls upon it. From one angle it can look like faint & milky and from another angle you see the colors (blue, orange, brown, sometimes almost black). Rust however will look like an ugly piece of dry dirt from any angle. If you draw your fingers over it, you will feel it, since it has started to corrode the metal and is eating its way into the blade surface.

There is definitely a difference in some orange and yellow tint and rust. If you look at most of the knives in this thread there is some orange and/or yellow tint in the patina. When there is rust there you'll know it. The colors and patterns in my knife change each time I use it.
If God wanted me to be a vegetarian he wouldn't have made animals taste so good.

I am convinced that what had was patina and not rust. It came off easy with bar finders friend and gentle scrubbing. Also no pitting.
