Why Chefs don't make dog food....

Some back story:

My forever dog (I foster a lot of pit bulls, 3 a year on average) is missing part of his lower intestine (two fosters before we adopted he ate a ranch bottle cap) so for the last 3.5 years we've been adding pumpkin puree to his diet to help with bowel movements.

My wife wanted to try sweet potato puree instead of pumpkin... canned pumpkin 1.29, canned sweet potato 3.19...

Off to the store I go.
2 pounds of sweet potatoes, 1.41
1 pound of chicken livers, 1.69

Come home, cook the livers down, bake the potatoes.
Throw it all in the Robo-coupe add in 1 cup of greek yogurt and then emulsify it while it's running with avocado oil.

In the short.. I made dog pate...
Should have thrown in some brandy.

How many can equivalents (regular sized dog food can) do you think it makes....my 3 greyhounds go through a lot of food and we are always looking for a little something extra to add to the diet, mainly for some variety. Pumpkin and sweet potato help to grease the system as well as solidify things and add a little buld....always supposed to be good for GI issues.....guess it is the Metamucil for canines. Not sure why we are talking about this on a cooking thread...but good info.

My wife came home from dog store today with cookies that are identical to vanilla Oreo's....the only thing different is a little dog bone embossed on the wafer. If she had put these in the people pantry, I would have crushed them after dinner and a few drinks. Would have been a good April fools joke....these things are dead ringers for a people cookie, though my 21yr old son said the after taste was not as good as the real deal...yes, he took a bite.

Thanks Nick....that what we have always done when needed 1TB. Do you freeze some of it....1.5 QT at 1 TB at a time is a lot...will it hold?

Yeah I freeze it
It's a lot, we go though about a pint of pumpkin a week so I froze this batch into pint containers

tbis is a new venture for us as he was having some digestive issues and we wanted to sub out his pumpkin.
His normal food is 45% crude protein. Pumpkin or potato add fiber and help bowl movements.

But I figured if I was making sweet potato purée I could throw in some liver for vitamin help too.

Love it man! We just found out my little buddy has mild pancreatitis, so we're cooking her meals as well now. Nothing near as exciting until she recovers though. Just a lean meat and white rice at a specific ratio right now and although bland, she's loving it as she never got any human food, ha.

Sevin gets a stew made from Venison organs and meat. Sweet potatoes, zucchini, celery, bean sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, quinoa, and home made chicken stock!
We make a huge batch that lasts about 45 days. We make up portions and freeze them.
I am doing some tomorrow so will post some shots.
I use these times to do serious knife testing as it is the only time I prep restaurant quantities.

No...
If I don't put his bowl in a corner for him to eat out of it'll end up on the other side of the first floor
One time he pushed it down the basement stairs

He doesn't get nice bowls.
He's 50/50 American Bulldog and American Staffordshire Terrier
So he thinks he's gentle but he's a bit of a bull in a China shop.
