Re: Wish me luck...

I'm just learning on stones, but I bought some kiwi knives on amazon to practice on. They were about $5 each and I dull them on my concrete driveway then take them to the stones. You might want to look at that brand to practice on.

Re: Do you like these cutting boards?

It's gorgeous, but I wouldn't buy it for me. Depending on the price I might buy one as a wedding gift or a housewarming present for someone, but I imagine it would exceed my normal budget range for gifts to non-family members.

Re: Shibata (West Japan Tools) carbon pan/ skillet

I've been using a carbon skillet for a while now, but it's French and not Japanese. They're amazing and I'm going to be buying a larger too one since mine is only 10.25" diameter. You can't go wrong was carbon steel frying pans. BTW, I have that sharp edge transition too and flip my eggs with a...

Re: Which direction to put pressure

Thanks, Jeff. FisherMAn sent me some stones to try, so I'm trying to learn the technique to switch out from my Lanksy (yes, peer pressure works LOL). I bought a couple of those $5 Kiwi knives on amazon to learn on and am dulling them on concrete then trying a resharpening. First attempt was last nig...

Re: Which direction to put pressure

I tried a few things last night and am still figuring out what works. I think leading edge or even pressure was naturally the easiest and pressure on the edge trailing was most difficult.

Re: First new Jknives and post

The knife is gift wrapped and put away. But I did take some pictures first in case people want a close up look of what the Fujin pattern looks like. It's spectacular.

Pictures are attaching again to the forum so here are a few that I took. Mitch, I'd love to see some of your knife too.

Re: What did you cook today?

For starters I'm doing a cast iron skillet breakfast. Just cooking the onions, serrano and jalapeño and red chili flakes with garlic and spices before adding the egg and cheddar cheese. Tonight is ham, mac and cheese. Whats with this error message? "The image file you tried to attach is invali...

Which direction to put pressure

Quick basic sharpening question for water stones. If you are holding the knife with the cutting edge away from you, do you put firm pressure on the push or pull stroke when using a coarse stone to get your initial burr? Or does it not matter?

Re: Covid vaccine today

I'm finished with my vaccine and got the Pfizer shots. No side effects for the first shot and after the second shot I woke up the next morning with a sore arm, but that was better by the end of the day. There's nothing I'd worry about with getting any of the shots.

Re: Twice in one week!

Great job on the knives Ronnie. Once they learn to respect the edge and keep their fingers away they'll be far less likely to cut themselves in the future, so I say you did them a major service. One of the secretaries at my work brought in her main kitchen knife for me to sharpen on my Lansky a coup...

Can't post pictures

I'm not sure why but pictures aren't uploading to threads or PM's, even when they are super small.

Re: What did you cook today?

I had it the first time at my friend's seder a couple of years ago and was hooked. I'd attach a finished picture but I think the website is having problems because I'm getting blocked from all attachments. My friend's recipe is a variant of this: https://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Ellyn-G...

Re: First new Jknives and post

Great choice on the knife! I just bought the last Fujin AS santoku listed on CKTG as a birthday gift for my brother and damn that thing is gorgeous. It's getting wrapped up tonight and stored until I get to see him this fall. I totally agree that the pictures don't do it justice.

Re: What did you cook today?

My friend in Israel sent me a recipe for homemade gefilte fish. Basically, it's like a meatloaf made with cod and salmon instead of beef. It was really tasty and healthy. My oldest kid is preparing for a power lifting competition so dishes with lots of protein are a big hit right now.

Re: Stove/Range died - Recommendations?

I bought a new gas stove a bit over a year ago. All I can say is that the 5th burner in the middle is useless because the heat output is super low. So, don't pay extra for that.

Re: Magnetic Knife Block

This place seems to sell them for considerably less than what I’ve been paying, even when you factor in their rather outrageous shipping costs. I think I will try magnets4less.com for my next project. Harbor freight carries them too and at a good price. If you have one nearby that will save you the...
